CD Player wont spin discs, but motor works.

I have a top loading cd player that will not spin a disc. The motor
works fine and you can see it spinning but for some reason the disc
will not spin. I removed the top disc clamp from the lid and placed it
on the disc to give some more pressure while testing with the lid open
but still no luck. I am suspecting that perhaps there is a type of
felt or {*filter*} pad that is missing that the dsic would normally sit on
which could allow it to grip better,

Any ideas,

Thanks,

Troy.

I assume you've cleaned the laser lens.
If it's a top-loader, then somewhere there's a lid switch. You'll need to
defeat (bridge) this switch with the lid open, then turn on the power. See
if the lens is focusing. It should move up and down at least one to three
times. If it is, and you can see a little red spot down inside the pickup
when viewed from an angle (at least several inches away) then the pickup may
be bad. You said you had removed the clamper? After defeating the lid
switch, turn the piece ON with a disc clamped in place. At the time when the
disc "should" spin, give it a slight push in a clockwise direction. If the
disc "takes off" and spins, then you have a partially shorted spindle motor.

Are you saying the motor spins even with a disc in place but it slips?

Or, as Mark replied, there are many other things to check?

See the CD repair guide at the site below.

It sounds as though the hub has been pushed down the motor shaft.
Sometimes you can *carefully* slide it back up. Too high won't work,
too low won't work.. You just need to find the right height. Good
luck!

Maybe the plate the disk sits on is slipping on the motor spindle, so the
motor spins but there is no grip on the disk plate?

See if it moves on the shaft. A bit of superglue between diskplate and shaft
will fix if this is the case.

Good luck

It should be noted that, unless you have the right tools, you should not
attempt to adjust the elevation of the spindle hub unless you absolutely know
what you're doing.

Carelessly using a flat head screwdriver, as an example, could warp the hub and
cause the disc to wobble when it spins.  - Reinhart

I really doubt if this is his problem. And superglue is quite likely to ruin
the motor; Murphy's Law dictates it will surely run down into the top
bearing.
I still say try a proper cleaning BEFORE other measures. It is quite common
to exhibit his type of problems first on CD-R's due entirely to cleaning
problems.

IOW, only do that if the item is otherwise a complete writeoff?

"Well, it's already broken beyond economical repair, might as well fiddle
with it me-self" does have a certain appeal to me.

Well the problem was as I suspected. The lens focuses okay and the
motor spins but the plate slips underneath the disc. I cut some peices
of double sided tape and stuck them on the plate and this fixed the
problem. Does anyone know a more permanent solution such as glueing a
circular piece of {*filter*} etc.

Regards,

Troy.

This would suggest that either a {*filter*} or similar pad is missing or the
clamper isn't doing its job.

Sam,

Im guessing the {*filter*} pad must be missing as the clamp seems to work
okay. I will either try to fashion one or see if I can buy it as a
part although I dont think I will have much luck.

Thanks for the help.
