HELP: Decoding serial data from General Motors Computer

Has any figured out the protocol and data format from the ALDL
connector on a late model GM car (1988-1993)?  I have determined the
serial communication paramters are 8192 baud, 1 stop bit, no parity.
The folks on the auto newsgroups seem to just read the trouble codes
from the flashing lights.  I would like to read and log the sensor
data.

I worked on a project a few years ago that used the serial interface for
trucks and busses. I think it was called SAE-1802. We just went to the
local library and looked it up. It had the interface hardware and timing
and also described the commands. They may also have the stuff that cars
use.

So the real question is, what SAE number is assigned to that type of
interface?
