Biosphere II

 Biosphere II

I've just about finished scanning in the first Village Voice article
discussing Biosphere II, that massive terraium they're building in the
Southwest U.S.A. Ostensibly, the project is to create a self-enclosed
ecosystem, in which a team of eight people will live for a year in an effort
to create a sustainable ecology.
However, the Voice series-- two big articles, a couple of good
sidebars, and other stuff-- has determined that Biosphere II is run through
an authoritarian cult-like organization run by one John Allen; and that the
project is more or less intended to make certain that Allen's troupe can
migrate to Mars when the Earth goes kerflooey. Fun details include stories
about what little scientific training the Biospherians actually have, Allen's
penchant for beating up his followers, and the role of the shadowy Ed Bass,
the multimillionaire who's pumped about a hundred million dollars into the
project.

Like I said, I just scanned in the first major article. Knowing that
this may violate the copyright laws-- even though I'm not maing a dime off of
it, and wouldn't want to-- would anyone have any objections to my uploading a
DOS-text version?

The Voice article (which is coming) explains that most of the
credentials claimed by the Biospherians come from the "Institute of
Ecotechnica," another one of their ventures, or a somewhat disorganized trip
aboard their boat, the Heraclitis.
