About a couple of years ago, I made an 8" newtonian using a sonotube. As
far as the inside goes, just peeling the top layer of paper seemed just
fine and it was then easy to to put a flat-black coat of paint. For the
outside, I used a hair-dryer to slowly evaporate the wax away. This took
a while to do, but afterwards, it was nice and smooth. I then used a layer
of primer and then a couple of layers of polyeurethrane(sp?) paint.
