 lenses ..who to ask??the lab!!!

i'm tired of seeing posts that are incorrect or only tell half the
story!! if you have a technical question on lenses.....hi-index,
polycarb...types of progressive lenses..a.r. coats.....ect. ect. ect......
if you have questions i would be more than happy to answer them....i OWN
a lab!! and make grind hundreds of lenses a day....
since wholesale business is what i do i have to be up to date on all
lenses and ways to produce jobs to the ansi standards....now as to whats
available..well there are hundreds of lens types out there..depending on
your personal needs...and as to the problem of who knows what....i get
many calls from doctors during any given day wanting to know about lenses
and which type i would recommend...now i wouldn't claim to know refracting
and treating the eye...but when it comes to lenses i'll put my know how up
against any doctors...and i can bet that i'll know more!!!
so please...if it's a technical question please don't answer the
question if you don't know the whole answer...it usually ends up causing
more problems than solving them....a little information is more dangerous
than no information!!
this is my first post..usually i just answer lens question directly to
the poster...but i was tired of reading some of the incorrect RE:
.........if you're in the optical field than you know some of the
answers...but people that are asking questions that aren't are believing
some of the answers posted.....
gives us a break.....if it's medical than let the doctors answer
it...if its technical than let us technical people handle it....isn't that
easier???LOL
well i feel better now...got that gripe off my chest...i don't think
anything will change but atleast i feel better.............

Hey Specs, jump in on any incorrect post. Don't wait to be asked.
That's how it works.

Just don't generalize, pick a thread and get on it!

I agree with William Stacy on this issue.  If you want people to consult
you for expert opinions, you have to demonstrate your expertise in
writing. Owning a business does not prove that you are really an expert.
Likewise, fancy credentials, advanced degrees, etc., do not prove
expertise.  The only thing that matters here is the quality of what you
write.

 lenses ..who to ask??the lab!!!
ben,

i take it you are not familiar with the wholesale optical
business...there are no "just an owner" ...its all hands on work!! and you
have to stay up on all products new and old...your business depends on
this.
besides owning a wholesale lab,and working in that wholesale lab..i also
own a retail outlet so i'm familair with the wholesale market as well as
retail....
to be able to make lenses you have to understand all aspects of
optics...such as index of refraction, types of index, abbe values, optical
centers, decentration,ect. ect. ect.
as for actual hands on production experiance...i can't count how many
lenses i personally have surfaced and edged over the years...anything from
glass lenses to polycarb.
you are correct in that just owning a business isn't enough,if you don't
understand what you are actually producing.and yes i agree that degree's
don't mean much if you havn't got that hands on experiance.
but i do have that experiance..and all i was offering was a little free
advice ...if people don't want it thats fine by me, i just thought i would
volenteer advice.
i'll just return to answering e-mail one on one....the posts i saw that
stated that there was to much in post arguments was correct. i know how
much knowldge i have on the optical industry and yes i do have the
degree's and i have written for publications.....all i was doing was
offering a little friendly advice......
   i'm sorry if i offended
anyone................................................................

 lenses ..who to ask??the lab!!!
Jeff Trail writes "Ask the Lab" and that's just what I am doing.  I am an
Ophthalmic Science student at Camden County College in Blackwood, NJ.  I
am currently working on a research paper on Aspheric Design lenses, and am
particularly interested in Aspheric Minus lenses. What do you know about
them, both in general and regarding specific brands.  I was able to obtain
some technical info from Optima regarding the Hyperindex 1.66 and
Hyperview 1.66, however Sola, Silor and Gentex have only supplied
promotional material which contains very little usable info that is of the
quality needed to write a decent research paper.  Also, Pentax didn't
respond at all. Any assistance you can provide would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

yeah, those people on usenet aren't always too cool--but it ain't
true that they'll kick you off the net if you ever use a capital
letter other than in an abbreviation of a STATE.
