Important information contained in the same news item:

* Participants in the study were asked only to recall from
memory an estimate of their drinking in the past.

* The study warrants further investigation.

* Dr. Toni Miles of the University of Texas Health Science Center
stated that "it's not yet time to start encouraging life-long
teetotalers to imbibe" (Journal of the American Geriatrics
  Society, 1998;46)

 And,
* "Individual factors that argue against initiation of drinking
in late life include risk of falls with fracture, hemorrhagic
stroke, and {*filter*}-polypharmacy (multiple drug) interactions."
