 Bifocal Contact lenses

Hi,
I am intertested in getting bifocal contact lenses. I currently
wear gas permeable monovision contacts and would like to switch
to  bifocal contact lenses. Can anyone who reads this newsgroup
provide me with information on RGP bifocal contacts. I would like
to hear from bifocal contact lense users. Some questions that i have
 are;
Are there different types of RGP bifocal lenses?
Is one manufacturer better than another? There is a alote of
   publicity on Boston Envision.
Is there special insertion procedures associated with bifocal
   contacts.
Is there a Contact Lens Association that I can contact about
getting information on contact lens practitioners.
   Cost?
Can bifocal contacts be purchased thru mail order with proper
   fitting and prescription?
Is there a soft contact lense for people that need bifocals?
    Is this a better alternative?

Yep.

More on the finishing end than the material end. Some labs can make a
dandy lens out of plexiglass, while another can't make a wearable one
from the best Boston has to offer.

No

Yes, but they're mostly good ol' boys clubs as far as the info you'll
get.  Talk about filtering...

Relatively spendy. I charge $500 for an RGP bifocal fitting.

Sure, but who are you gonna blame if it doesn't work???

There are, but I've never seen one I like.

Dear Jim,

Why not consult a local optometrist regarding these questions?  Ask
him/her to speak frankly about these issues/concerns so as to get
first-hand professional advice and the latest information on the newest
lenses.

Ah, so that's what those lens-flippers are for.  Always knew they had
some purpose in life.  What's your rate for blame-taking?

Yes indeed.  There are about four uniquely different designs---and ways of
going about achieving bi- and multfocal optics. Not to mention a dozen
different materials.

Envision is not a bifocal design, although they do intend to introduce one
(maybe they snuck one by me!). Just one of the many aspheric curve designs
made of a  priopietary (but not terribly unique) plastic.

No. You just plant them on your eye.

Yes, but asking a friend or neighbor for a referral to respected doc is a
better idea.

A lot.  OK, thats a value judgement.  But certainly more than for single
vision lenses. There a bit more fitting office visit and follow-up offfice
visit time, more thinking and finessing by the doc, and a greater cost of
materials.  My fees for multifocal lens services are an additional $100 in
professional service fees and $80 in materials, over the regular RGP fees.
I believe the fee range around here is from around $425 to $500. Some
places even more.  When they work, they're well worth the cost.

I am not at all a proponent of monovision, especially for folks with
normal binocular vision systems. Just doesn't make sense to mess with
that!

Yes and no.  It may not be such a good idea, even if you are just getting
replacements.  For one thing, some of the manufacturers and lens
fabricating laboratories offer special discounts on replacement lenses to
happy wearers, which is passed on only through the prescribing doctor. But
there is, I believe, a good reason for this:

It's really a good idea of have then new lenses evaluated on-the-eye for
possible "irregularities", both comfort and optics, that may occur with
these rather sophisticated designs.   Not to mention replacing your lenses
might be an opportunity to modify the design to something that works even
better!  Your needs might change and/or there might be a better fix for
your particular vision demands. Regular contact with your eye care
provider, (not to mention yearly check ups!), is important.

Personally, I've not found a soft lens that works as well and consistantly
as the RGP designs.  But I do have a number of patients who are quite
pleased with their soft lenses and wouldn't trade them for anything else.
I prefer to fit RGPs, except in certain specific circumstances.  You know,
"Whattever Works and If It Aint Broke, Don't Fix It".

And give my regards to my Alma Matta! SUNY/UB.

Larry

Maybe he wants unbiased answers--and information on users' end
results.

What's this see-us stuff?  Of course he can talk to a local OD
(perhaps only for a consultation cost) without being told to by one in
this newsgroup.
