 Golfer and clicking sternum cartlidge

Golfing son during stretching exercises prior to playing gets a clicking
sound in his chest.  Sometimes this is followed a few hours later by pain
in the same area.

Anti-inflammatory medication has been prescribed and this clears it up in a
few days, he's 24 and worries about missing important tournaments,  but
needs to stretch.

Would be interested to hear if anyone has come across this condition, is it
common and how can it be avoided?
