 Dental Problems

Hi,
Maybe someone can help me or lead me in the right direction.

I have been surfing from depression for at least 2+yrs now and I have been
on several different medications.
During this time my teeth just seemed to decay over night.  Of course this
added to my depression for the fact that my mouth was now full of black
teeth that were falling apart.  I had no idea what was causing it. Yes I was
not taking proper care of my mouth but missing a brushing every other day
would not cause teeth to just rot out in a matter of a few months.

I have now learned that *Elavil* & *Zoloft* (which I had used both) are a #1
cause of Dry Mouth? which I had bad!!! Wow...if you don't have to take
*Elavil* stay away from it...or at least drink TONS of water.

My QUESTION is....has anyone else had this same problem??   AND! if so where
can I learn more about it and ***PROOF*** that being on those medications
can lead, assist, and bring on dry mouth and dental decay.

Thank you very much,
TOnyC

Elavil (amitriptyline) is an old tricyclic antidepressant that causes
dry mouth and potentially  increased dental caries. The degree of this
the you describe is unusual in its severity. Your poor dental hygiene
would have accelerated the problem. Brushing 3 times a day would have
reduced the risk of this sort damage. Elavil is so old fashioned and
prone to all sort of side-effects that most doctors would avoid it
nowdays.

Zoloft rarely causes much dry mouth, so don't blame that. The
combination of the 2 {*filter*}, however, may lead to raised amitriptyline
levels and increased side-effects , especially the dry mouth. You didn't
mention doses.

***PROOF***? The Internet not the place to find "proof". You will find
opinions here of varying degrees of reliability and credibility.
