15dec1998: Although the Mind.forth RE-ENTRY Scr #23 code will not
be written for a while, an explanation of re-entry can be given.
The Nobel laureate Gerald Edelman has written extensively on re-entry
in his books on the brain-mind and on his Theory of Neuronal Group
Selection (TNGS), but Edelman's ideas on re-entry may not be the
same as what is practiced here in Mind.forth AI. As a courtesy
both to Edelman and to the inquisitive reader, he is cited here.
The diagram above shows an instance of re-entry in the visual
memory channel. When an old image (that is, a collection of
features) is recognized, it is also redeposited as an engram of
current experience along the advancing front of consciousness.
In 26nov1994 Mind.rexx and in ca. 1999 Mind.forth, a Chomsksyan
syntax tree generates a sentence of verbal thought by reactivating
old phonemic memories stored in the auditory memory channel: ear{ }.
Although it was created out of old memory traces, the sentence is
a new experience, amd therefore it must *enter* the very mind that
has created it. The AI software simply feeds the new sentence back
into the SENSORIUM Scr #15 subroutine, but with special tagging to
record the fact that the source of the re-entered idea was internal.
