Justice For All
Justin Dart: AMERICA YES, IMPEACHMENT NO
THE HOUSE HAS VOTED TO IMPEACH PRESIDENT CLINTON. No matter what you
think
about the Monica affair the hard reality is: the impeachers are not
friends
of people with disabilities.
THEY KILLED UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, the Patients Bill of Rights and the
Jeffords-Kennedy Bill. They attack the ADA and the IDEA, Social Security,
civil rights, affirmative action and the freedom, to govern ones own
life.
They block the expansion of community based services. They attempt to cut
taxes for the well-to-do and reduce investments in America for all. They
would take us back to power and privilege for the few.
SPEAKER NEWT GINGRICH VOTED AGAINST ADA FOUR TIMES, when it passed in
1990.
Speaker Designate Dennis Hastert voted against ADA on eight out of nine
votes. Majority Leader{*filter*} Armey and Majority Whip Tom Delay major
managers of
the impeachment - voted against ADA all nine times.
BILL CLINTON HAS EXPANDED THE EMPOWERMENT OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
Building on the good foundation created by George Bush, the President has
stood firm for our rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Medicare and Medicaid. He
has
reached out to us, empowered us in his administration, met with us and
listened to us as never before.
BUT IN SPITE OF OUR GAINS, people with disabilities are still the poorest
of
the poor, the most oppressed of the oppressed. Millions of us 67% - are
unemployed. Millions of us are segregated from our communities,
imprisoned in
institutions, nursing homes and back rooms. We need Bill Clinton. We
need
Bill Clinton to stay the course.
I WISH ALL OF YOU COULD KNOW THE PRESIDENT like I do. He is not the
worlds
first perfect person, but he is a person of principles, of brilliance, of
profound love for all people. In my heart he is one of us.
WITH ALL DUE RESPECT FOR MY BELOVED COLLEAGUES WHO DISAGREE WITH ME, I
passionately believe that the removal of our President by people who
oppose
our principles would be a disaster for our movement and for our nation.
I URGE ALL WHO SHARE MY VIEWS to contact your colleagues in the movement,
the
President, the members of Congress and the public media.
AMERICANS LET US TRANSCEND PARTISANSHIP, embrace each other and get on
with
the nation's business. Americans keep your eyes on the prize, a society
where everyone wins. Impeach discrimination, not Bill Clinton. Impeach
poverty, not Bill Clinton. Impeach hate and hypocrisy, not Bill Clinton.
Colleagues I respect you. I love you. Together we shall overcome.
Justin Dart
