Dr. Koop and the Future of Medicine
The March 29th issue of People Weekly magazine contains a feature
article by Dr. Everett Koop about the early days of medicine when
"doctors were interested in the whole person" and "the art of
diagnosis was to listen to the patient's history and put it together
as a detective would." He concludes his article with the statement:
"The hallmark of medical professionalism is putting the needs of
patients above one's own." Although discouraged about what has
happened to the profession, he is optimistic about a new breed of
medical students who "once again feel called to their profession."
Although Koop never mentions Adler, his ideas reflect the Adlerian
philosophy of treatment.
Adler suggested that all doctors should be trained in the principles
of Individual Psychology. It would certainly get at the root of what
is wrecking the practice of medicine today.
