 HELP Urethral Strictures

1
I need information on the treatment of urethral strictures.
I need to know what is out there and the pros and cons of it.
So far the options seem very limited.
             Thank you

 HELP Urethral Strictures

: I need information on the treatment of urethral strictures.
: I need to know what is out there and the pros and cons of it.

In my case some scarring and stricture at the bladder neck was
treated with mechanical stretching.  This involved inserting a
graduated series of plastic tubes (I'm sure there's a medical
term but I don't know it) through the urethra.  The tubes were
flexible and coiled into the bladder.  The idea (in my case) was
to stretch the sphincter at the bladder neck which had signs
of scarring, the result of an earlier TURP.

I've had this procedure done a couple of times in the last 4 or
5 years.  My urodoc tells me that some of his patients have it
done routinely on a regular basis every few months although he
encourages many of them to have a minor surgical procedure that
will permanently relieve the stricture.  Some people (me included)
seem to prefer the periodic "stretching".  Discomfort is fairly
mild but there is a bit of a "surprise factor" when the plastic
tubes coil into the bladder...once you know to expect it there's
no problem but I wish he'd told me about it ahead of time. The
procedure takes my doc about 15 minutes or so. The main thing is
you feel like you have to pee all the time for a day or so after
but that goes away.

 HELP Urethral Strictures

Dear Lou
The procedure that was recomended was anything but minor.
It involved a supra-pubic cath and a long time in healing.
It would help if you or anyone else out there could refer
me to thier MD.
               Thanks for your reply

The procedure you are talking about is totally different than
simple dilations which are routinely done by most urodocs.

If you are not getting adequate explanations from your current
doc and you are not comfortable with his/her recommendations
it would be clever and wise to seek out the opinion of another
urologist in your area.
