Propylthiouracil (Propyl-Thyracil) is indicated for the treatment of
hyperthyroidism. It works by inhibiting synthesis of thyroid hormone
AND by inhibiting the peripheral conversion of T4 to T3.
The usual {*filter*} dose is 100 mg three times daily, but is individualized
according to the person's response.
Sometimes the drug can cause nausea, headache, joint pain,
itching, edema, and a number of other effects. If you notice anything
new after starting this medication you should discuss it with your doctor.
The best response occurs when the drug is taken in equally spaced
doses and at the same time each day with respect to meals (usually
with cooking.net">food to decrease nausea).
Correct storage of the medication is important: avoid excessive heat
and humidity (i.e. don't store this medication in the bathroom).
Your doctor or pharmacist should teach you the signs of both hyper and
hypothyroidism and what to do if they occur.
