 Suggestions for Sleep Aid

Hello,

I am looking for suggestions on what medicine would be safe for long term use
to help control my sleep patterns, which in turn greatly helps keep my daily
headaches under control.  I am currently using ativan (4mg at night...yes it
takes this much to bring on sedation) and have not had any problems with it
thus far.  My doctor would like to find another drug to use since he is weary
of long term use of benzos.

I am also on varapamil for the headaches and occasionaly use allegra for
allergies.  I also use oxycodone for extreme pain control (not daily).

I have tried Ambien which caused worse headaches and nausea but did help me
sleep.  I have also tried most of the anti-histamines which seem to have no
effect in bringing on sedation and keeping me asleep.  Melatonin also seemed to
worsen my headaches.  I tried Kava-Kava...which provided nada-nada for sleep.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Note: Remove the 'no_spam_' from my email address if you would like to send
directly to me.

Thanks,

My short list of sleep suggestions for you:

low doses of a sedating antidepressant:
trazodone
amitriptyline
nortriptyline
imipramine
clomipramine
doxepin

or Depakote, an anticonvulsant that can help with migraines and can be
sedating (if the headaches are migraines)

good luck.

Folks,

Thanks for the great responses so far.  One thing I forgot to mention is that I
have tried all of the tricyclic anit-d's which did help with sleep but I get
severe tachycardia (125 bpm at rest) so we got away from those as well.  It
sounds like I am pretty much SOL in this area.  Thanks for the info!

Again I say: Try trazodone!! ... it's not a tricyclic.. in its own class and
very sedating.
