The liver is responsible for the processing of many chemicals in the body
(this is called metabolism). There are many enzymes in the liver which aid
in metabolism.
A subset of enzymes which exist in the liver (also in the gut and elsewhere)
is called the Cytochrome P450 enzyme system. There are a number of subgroups
in the CYP450 system (with such names as CYP3A4, CYP2D6...). These subgroups
can sometimes be attributed to the breakdown or metabolism of particular
chemicals.
The actions of the subgroup can be reduced (inhibited) or increased
(induced) by certain chemicals or {*filter*}. This can lead to the metabolism of
other {*filter*} which may be metabolised by the particular subgroup to reach
higher or lower levels than normal.
