Acute transient synovitis of the hip

9 year old male with acute onset of hip pain and slight restriction of
hip ROM.  It appears that he has ATS of hip.

What are the current concepts in regards to etiology and treatment?
Is bed rest indicated or just restriction of his very active athletics?

What are the chances he will develope Legg-perthes?
Do you think arthrocentesis is indicated?
