The best source of data is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. They
do an annual survey of occupational injuries and illnesses by
industry.

You might also check with the AMA or the American Nursing Association
or other health-care groups who might have more detailed data.

Hi.  TIA for any and all help.  I'm trying to help my
wife with a term paper.  I myself am not a medical
person, so please exercise patience with me.  Here
goes:

We're looking for a source for stats on occupational-
related injuries and illness, specificly in the health
care field, broken down on a year-by-year basis.  The
idea is to find something that tracks, for instance,
cases of hepatitis among health care workers over the
years.  My wife wants to take this data and try to
correlate it to years when OSHA regulations were
adopted or changed, to attempt to determine which
regulations have been effective and which have not
(among other things).

So, is there a database that breaks down cases by
occupation to this level of detail?  We are willing
to do all the processing and hacking through the data-
base if we can just get pointed in the direction of
the right data.  I tried the OSHA and NIOSH home
pages, and they both list lots of publications, but
nothing with statistics or historical data.

Thanks in advance from:
C{*filter*}te (med tech supervisor) and Dave (can't
stand the sight of {*filter*} :-)

Don't tell me it takes a rocket scientist.  I *am* a rocket scientist.

David;

Good luck on this, I don't know of any such information, if you find
it, I   would be interested too. This will be a problem as many
organizations, especially health care organizations are slow to respond
to OSHA regulations and often find the least expensive way to comply,
which may meet the letter of the law but not the intent. I know this
from personal experience, at least in my part of the country, I suspect
finding correlation with OSHA regulation dates and improvements will be
difficult if not impossible.

On hospital workers' occ health, you might try the NIOSH 800 number (800
35 NIOSH); they might be able to put you in touch with someone who can
help.  I know that they have a list of topics and 'experts' thereon, but
I don't know offhand if your topic is on the list.
Be persistent - your question is an important one.
