The lost city of Ciudad Blanca or other hidden Maya sites in Honduras
may have been located by LIDAR technology. Seeing through the jungle
canopy was difficult before. The new LIDAR techniques used laser
pulses to filter out vegetation and provide an earth image below the
foliage.

(My note; Hernan Cortes began looking for this city in 1526, because
he believed it to be a legendary city of gold.  Several sightings of
the city have been claimed over the centuries, but none have ever been
verified.)
