Nutrients not Found in Vegan Diet?

I am trying to identify anything that may be totally lacking from a
strict vegetarian (vegan) diet ie: certain aminos, B-12 etc. I'm aware
of some of the problems with regards to absorbtion but what I'm am
really interested in finding out are the things that cannot be derived
from such a diet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Taurine was recently mentioned, although this can be synthesized
by the liver, as the liver goes more kaput, taurine needs to be
supplemented.  There was a recent (< week) article here mentioning this.

Carnitine, although not totally necessary as an outside source,
comes from meat and I would suspect would have a similar problem to
Taurine if liver function was reduced.

        Of course there's B-12 which you've mentioned.

Coenzyme Q-10 - Made by the liver from plant sources, but found in
outside sources too (beef heart especially, probably beef liver as well).
Whether reduced liver function could affect body levels hasn't been
studied to my knowledge.

That's about all I can think of ...except Cholesterol (animal
derived only), which of course you don't want.

In addition to B 12, need to watch Vit D, Calcium and zinc;  Kids,
premopausal and pregnant females need to add iron sources and be careful
to get sufficient calories.

You may be interested in the latest issue of {*filter*}Health, the
article on bloating, where I discuss the problem of phytic acid and
enzyme inhibitors in grains.  Phytic acid in particular inhibits the
absorption of zinc and other important minerals.  There are traditional
ways of cooking.net">food preparation (sprouting, fermentation) that get around it.

        Is B-12 found in mushrooms?
Also, amino acids should not be a problem in a good vegan diet.

No. (Unless  the mushrooms are contaiminated  by  faeces or industrial
