Jennifer Cohen's Study on Aspartame proving refrigerated aspartame breaks down to formaldehyde and DKP published in Food Chemical News

Dear Dave:

This is to let you know the cooking.net">food Chemical News published Jennifer's report
on aspartame (May 5, 1997) and picked up from your web page: "A summary of
Cohen's work which is posted on the World Wide Web at
http://www.***.com/
common scientific knowledge of aspartame's true properties. "Can young
Jennifer Cohen and her piggy-bank budget SHAME the FDA into doing its
job?"  said the summary. "Will they NOW divorce the drug companies,
reclassify aspartame as a cumulative toxic poison and then mandate its
removal from over 9000 items in the human diet? .. Does this study expose
a long standing FDA alliance with the drug industry?"

As I send this to you, I am answering the FDA's absurd's response for
copying another list.  One staffer said: .."rat studies offered no
evidence that formaldehyde is carcinogenic when ingested..."  With that
I'll simply let them read the FORMALDEHYDE OLYMPICS for a good laugh.
Then they say: "Evidence of formaldehyde and DKP in aspartame-containing
products "was considered in the safety review" of aspartame and yielded
"no cause for concern"..

Safety Review?  Aspartame was never proven to be safe.  In l980 the Board
of Inquiry of the FDA voted unanimously not to approve aspartame.  In l981
Satya Dubey, Senior FDA statistician stated in a memo that the brain tumor
data was so "worrisome" he could not recommend approval of NutraSweet."
Then Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr. was appointed the new FDA Commissioner in
April, l981.  In July, Dr. Hayes overruled the Public Board of Inquiry's
recommendation that "Aspartame should not be approved for marketing until
further animal testing was conducted to resolve the brain tumor issue."
In l983  Commissioner Hayes approved NutraSweet for soft drinks and then
soon after resigned and accepted a position with Searle's public
relation's firm, Burston Marsteller.  Monsanto bought Searle in l985.

The original studies on aspartame were the target for an indictment for
fraud that was never carried out because two U.S. Prosecutors, Sam Skinner
and William Conlon went to work for Searle's law firm defending the case,
Sidley & Austin.  These studies have never been replicated.  Dr. Ralph
Walton on 60 Minutes Dec. 29, l996 said that 90 independent studies were
done and 83 showed problems with aspartame.

Secret trade information that was not so secret, discussed during
Congressional Hearings state:  "we have no way of estimating maximum
likely abuse and hence need to utilize data based on almost complete
conversion to DKP.  If we include this .. we stand a good chance of ending
up with nothing.."

Diketopiperazine is a brain tumor agent and some of the rats developed
astrocytomas, a rare brain tumor.  This is the first stage of the deadly
malignant glioblastoma.  Dr. John Olney made world news several months ago
because of the association of these brain tumors and aspartame in the
population.  Dr. H. J. Roberts peer reviewed report on this appeared in
Journal of Advancement in Medicine, Volume 4, Number 4, Winter l991.

An FDA staffer also said the agency is "not surprised someone would find
formaldehyde and DKP in diet soda".  "We know it is there and we have
found no adverse effects" from the levels of the two agents that develop
in consumer products. ..  Maybe they should talk to the victims as cases
of brain tumors continue to flow into Mission Possible from consumers of
heavy use aspartame.  And Mission Possible, a volunteer force with
branches in other countries, does nothing but warn the world off
NutraSweet.  Would thousands and thousands and thousands of volunteers do
this if aspartame was not causing sickness and death, and by the FDA's own
report - 92 documented symptoms.  Among these listed are 4 types of
seizures, blindness, coma and DEATH!

The FDA said DKP and formaldehyde "are not there in sufficient quantities
to cause a safety concern" and do not accumulate to hazardous levels in
consumers. Neither substance triggers the Delaney clause's
"zero-tolerance" law.  I would suggest the FDA open the Merck manual and
read up on methanol (wood {*filter*}) that converts to formaldehyde, and
educate themselves on the fact that methanol is a cumulative poison!!!!
So many patients are suffering from methanol toxicity from aspartame that
mimics MS, that world expert H.J. Roberts, M.D. wrote a position paper on
it which is on the Dorway web page.  Dr.  Clarice Gaylord of the EPA
announced at the World Environmental Conference in l995 that there is an
epidemic of MS and lupus and they could not identify the toxin.
NutraSweet notoriously triggers lupus as well!

I would suggest the FDA read the Delaney Clause and the Congressional
Record. The late Dr. M. Adrian Gross, an FDA toxicologist, spoke out
against aspartame in the August 1, l985 Congressional Record. Gross, who
took part in on-site investigations at Searle laboratories, said the
studies carried out by Searle to show the safety of aspartame were "to a
large extent unreliable."  He said "at least one of those studies has
established beyond any reasonable doubt that aspartame is capable of
inducing brain tumors in experimental animals and that this ...  is of
extremely high significance."  Gross also testified that because aspartame
was capable of producing brain tumors and brain cancer, FDA should not
have been able to set an allowable daily intake of the substance at any
level.  Further he stated ... "In view of these indications that the
cancer causing potential of aspartame is a matter that had been
established way beyond any reasonable doubt, one can ask: What is the
reason for the apparent refusal by the FDA to invoke for this cooking.net">food
additive the so-called DELANEY AMENDMENT TO THE FOOD, DRUG AND COSMETIC
ACT?" The Delaney Amendment makes it illegal to allow any residues of
cancer causing chemicals in foods.  In his concluding testimony Gross
asked, "Given the (cancer causing potential of aspartame) how would the
FDA justify its position that it views a certain amount of aspartame as
constituting an allowable daily intake or 'safe" level of it? Is that
position in effect not equivalent to setting a 'tolerance' for this cooking.net">food
additive and thus a violation of that law?  And if the FDA itself elects
to violate the law, who is left to protect the health of the public."
(Congressional Record SID835:131, 8/1/85)

So aspartame did violate the Delaney Amendment and the FDA did violate its
own law!   And brain tumors were not the only cancers.  In the Bressler
there aspartame triggered mammary tumors, ovarian tumors and uterine
tumors, etc.

The article also states: "In its l985 aspartame approval, FDA said an
individual can safely consume 97 packets of the sweetener everyday." The
first thing that comes to mind is that you, Dave, almost lost your life on
33 packets a day for several years and now have cancer.  Perhaps the FDA
should have also added  the daily allowable intake was set for rats:

From Sweet'ner Dearest by H. J. Roberts, M.D., chapter 34:  MOUSE OR MAN?
MAYBE THE RATS WERE RIGHT?, PAGE 211  (1 800 -643-2665 - Sun Sentinel
Press) "Fairy tales ... can be dismissed as myths.  On the other hand, our
licensing and regulatory agencies must not be "myth-led".  Which brings me
to the FDA's arbitary increase of aspartame's ADI to 50 milligrams (mg)
/kilograms (kg) body weight (One kilgram is 2.2 pounds.)  This
questionable decision qualifies as an action that succeeds in "canceling
reality."

"The ADI represents the projection of animal studies based on
their lifetime intake.  This was the testimony of Dr. Frank Young,
former FDA Commissioner, before a committee of the U.S. Senate at
a hearing on Nov 3, l987 titled, "NutraSweet" Health and Safety
    Concerns."

The article further states:  "Cohen also referred to a University of
Wisconsin study on rhesus monkeys, in which daily aspartame consumption
caused epileptic seizures - after 200 days - in every monkey in the
study."  Obviously the FDA didn't want to tackle that one.  How can they
explain how a pivotal study which showed all the monkeys having grand mal
seizures on aspartame prove SAFETY!  (SC-18862)

It is unfortunate  the only replication of the original studies
continue to be performed on an unwarned and unprotected consumer public
and including 100 countries of the world.  This clinical observation the
FDA brands "anecdotal" validates aspartame as a deadly poison that can
destroy the brain, the optic nerve and the central nervous system and
ravage every organ in the body.  It also triggers an irregular heart
rhythm that may be responsible for many sudden deaths.  The evidence is in
the bodies of thousands of aspartame victims, well known to the FDA, and
case histories that flow into Mission Possible daily.

Because aspartame is a seizure triggering drug that causes memory loss and
blindness it is a great hazard to aviation.  The FAA continues to say they
can do nothing to alert pilots until the FDA takes responsibility.
Mission Possible now has an Aviation Division for this purpose.

The FDA continues to show its loyalty to Monsanto by refusing to require
replication of the original studies even though Dr. Jacqueline Verrett,
FDA toxicologist testified in l987 in a U.S. Senate hearing that the tests
were a disaster and should have been thrown out, and data in the study was
worthless.  She also said: "(aspartame) was too unstable to be used in hot
preparations, hot liquids and also diet drinks."

An 11 year old child, Jennifer Cohen, has used science to show to the
world what no scientist has ever shown.  Aspartame breaks down into
formaldehyde and DKP, a brain tumor agent, even in the fridge!  Dr. H. J.
Roberts wrote to Jennifer's father, Robert Cohen, of Oradell, New Jersey
and said: "Tell Jennifer that the findings in "parts per billion" are very
significant.  In fact, even if there are amounts in parts per trillion, as
in the case of certain pesticides, each cell in the body may contain
several molecules.  What are you going to do now that you have a world
class baby sitter?"

Dr. Roberts also sent to Jennifer "TWO" Roberts Gold Stars!

The formaldehyde olympics follows!
Subject: Re: Formaldehyde Olympics (fwd)

Dear Bob:  I so appreciate the statement from the NutraSweet web page:
"Formaldehyde has been implicated as a possible carcinogen when inhaled,
but this hasn't been shown to be the case when its taken by mouth."
Barbara Mullarkey says NutraSweet's excuse is there's never been a
study.  Can't you see it advertised:  "Needed: applicants for double blind
medical study, to drink formaldehyde to determine its carcinogenicity.

Whether you drink {*filter*} or inject it;  you'll get just as drunk.
Whether you drink formaldehyde, inject or breath it, you'll get just as
dead.  By consuming low doses for years, constantly and continuously
you just take longer to die, and you get to enjoy more misery: seizures,
blindness, mock MS, migraines, perhaps diabetes, etc, but you'll finally
be just as dead as if you drank a pint or so to begin with.  It sure makes
undertaker's  work easier, less embalming, as one observed: "bodies come in
 with high contents of formaldehyde."

It's a fine idea to test formaldehyde as a libation, and I've got the
solution. (pun) Since the executives at Monsanto/NutraSweet are
unconvinced as to the toxicity of embalming fluid as a drink, let's test
it ... on THEM!  Let's set up a study with Monsanto execs chug-a-lugging
various concentrations for six months.  Say, 5 shots a day, about the
consumption by some Diet Coke/Pepsi/Equal/Slimfast/Aspartame {*filter*}s.  So
we'll scientifically calibrate how much/long it takes to kill, blind or
paralyze you. The matter will be settled.

To get the ball rolling on this ground-breaking [really!] experiment I
pledge a 55 gallon drum of formaldehyde. I'll also donate a $50 casket
spray for the gold medalist in the competition.  We could call it: THE
NUTRAPOISON OLYMPICS. It's a little late, but we can ask the Olympic
Committee to kick in for the coffins.  And we can invite the IAT, The
International Association of Terrorists, to the Games, advising them that
bombs will be unnecessary because the whole thing will be a killer.
Only problem, 4 years from now the winners won't be able to defend their
titles, but can be honoured by a moment of silence.

In fact, we could expand these Games to include any other poisons which
haven't been drink-tested: Rattlesnake venom, Arsenic, Hydrogen Cyanide,
Plutonium, Essence of Black Widow, Nightshade, etc.

Watch for Formaldehyde Olympics, part II

 Regards,
 Betty

P.S.  The Merck Manual says under formaldehyde: "This substance has been
listed as a carcinogen by the EPA."
