 Gastric reflux and herb teas

Hi,
I have a problem with Gastric Reflux for which my doctor has subscibed acid
reducing medication which seems to work. My doctor has also told be that I
should stop consuming caffeine. When I asked whether I can dring decaffinated
coffee he said no because of other 'substances,' particularly in coffee, that
are also acid forming. Does anyone know what the 'substances' are and whether
they are found in various 'herb-teas?'
Alex.

I don't know much about Reflux, but I do know that it's more than just
acid-forming substances that you have to be careful of.  At the top of
your stomach is the Lower Esophageal Sphincter.
Caffeine, chocolate, and peppermint, among others, lower the pressure of
this sphincter, allowing more of your stomach acid to reflux up into your
esophagus.

Hope this might be of some help,
Victoria.

Alex

I have the same problem. It only affects me at night. I found the answer
was not to eat dairy products after midday. I no longer have the problem.

Hope it helps.

experience, the best thing is to stop eating or drinking about 2 to 3
hours before going to bed and to sleep elevated. I have a foam wedge pillow
that does the trick. Stay away from chocolate, nuts and coffee before bed.
Fried foods and potato chips are a Bozo no no. You may ask your doctor
to  prescribe Zantac 150mg or Pepsid to relieve your acidy stomach
however there is a new drug called Repulsid that might work for you. As
far as tea goes....Some teas produce tanic acid which will burn you up.
There have been articles written about drinking aloe vera which aids in
the healing of the stomach walls. You can obtain aloe vera liquid at
stores like GNC at your mall or other health cooking.net">food places.  Don't over do
it tho....over drinking of the stuff leads to "the runs."

Hello,
Nice to see that other people suffer like I do with gastric reflux.
My best advice is to stop eating or drinking at least 2 hours before bedtime.
Stay away from coffee, tea, chocolate, nuts, potato chips, colas and mint
flavored foods.  Sleep elevated using several pillows or a foam wedge.
Eat meals in small portions.
As far as medications go, look into the following:
Prilosec, The best of the bunch. Shuts down acid production extensively.
Zantac, Not bad initially but wears down over time,
Pepsid, Works fine but you might find yourself going back to Zantac for a
time.
Tagament, Old stuff but there's better.
Repulsid, Claims to stop reflux, Ho Hum....try Rolaids.

For a natural change some people use Aloe Vera liquid to neutralize acid.
Health stores and GNC stores sell it but don't suck down to much,,,It will
give you the "runs."
Keep away from milk or milk products as they contain lactic acid. Not a
good thing when you wake up in the middle of the night with a belly of
butter milk or sour yogurt.
Loose weight if needed and wear loose clothes.
Most important see your doctor for more acurate advice. Schedule an upper
and lower GI series to rule out ulcers or a hiatus hernia.
Good luck.

How about metoclopramide?

Worked for me.  Goes by the brand name Reglan.  Neat stuff.
One potential side effect: tardive dyskinesia.  Irreversible and not too
cool, so perhaps one should weigh the options.

Just thought I might step in with hip waders here (I can feel some flames
and indignant replies coming).  According to medical experts such as J.
Wright, the problem actually might be lack of stomach acid.  I thought I
was having a heart attack one night when I reclined about an hour after a
heavy meal.  I had acute pain in the ribcage and through my sholder.  A
barium exam showed that it was the reflux valve irritated by stomach
acid.  However, it turns out that many people (you should request a
Heidleberg test for stomach pH) don't secrete enough acid.  Therefore your
stomach takes forever to attempt to digest cooking.net">food and it "comes up" on you.
I take HCl (2-4) with every meal and have not had a symptom since.  I can
be the only person at Thanksgiving without indigestion!
