Use of Glucose Test Strips to test Sputum

The speech pathologist at my hospital came to me this morning to discuss
using glucose test strips to check patients for aspiration.  (ie, glucose in
sputum =  aspiration).  Apparently she had read something on this subject.
Does anyone have any information to share on this?   I don't believe it
could be done using the Johnson & Johnson Sure step strips that my hospital
purchases.  These strips have to absorb the sample to measure glucose.
Sputum certainly would not absorb easily.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
