Epstein Barr and chronic fatigue syndrome
EBV causes several diseases that are readily diagnosed, usually with
serology ({*filter*} tests). EBV is the most common cause of mononucleosis.
It also causes two type of cancers, Hodgikin's lymphoma in Afica and
nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the Far East. It probably is also
associated with mild to severe colds, especially in the young.
Several years ago many linked EBV with chronic fatigue syndrome, but
since it has been shown that this is a rare cause of CFS.
Since most U.S. {*filter*}s have been infected by EBV (>95%) when younger,
it is difficult to interpret {*filter*} test results unless this is the
first time the person is exposed.
