Mom may have Lyme - Please help!

I'll try to relate this as best as I can. The past three months have
been frustrating.

I'm a NR-EMT-D - I know enough about medicine to use caution and prudent
judgment in these matters, but I really
need help here, if any LD literate DR's are out there PLEASE reply to

In the past three months, mom has had the following symptoms come and
go, some stayed and are getting worse...

THE READERS DIGEST VERSION,

ACUTE ARTHRITIS ATTACK
STIFF ACHING NECK AND SHOULDERS
SEVERE HEADACHES/MIGRAINES - CLUSTERING TYPES
GENERAL MALAISE AND WEAKNESS - getting worse
LOW GRADE FEVER  - for two weeks
MIGRATING JOINT PAIN
GENERALIZED ACHINESS
TINGLING IN AT LEAST ONE EXTREMITY
SEVERE FATIGUE - getting worse
SHORT TERM MEMORY LOSS - slight, more recent symptoms

If anyone know of a good LD literate Dr in Staten Island or Brooklyn,
let me know...

THE REALLY LONG DETAILED VERSION - SIT DOWN FOR THIS ONE....

My mother is 80 years old as of 4/98, was in excellent  health up until
August of this year. Her symptoms
started with a feelings of slight  malaise and weakness, on 8/9 she
developed terrible migraines/cluster
headaches, neck and shoulder pain. This continued for several weeks.

She saw a general practitioner in Staten Island , NY, her PE (physical
exam)  was within normal
limits but her {*filter*} work came back showing higher than  normal
sedimentation rates (indicating arthritis) and a lower than
normal hemoglobin and hematocrit  indicating anemia, (mom was always
borderline anemic to begin with)
She was sent for an MRI to rule out a possible brain tumor due to the
headaches. MRI came back negative,
She has seen an ear, nose, and throat specialist to rule out any
sinusitis, also negative.
Both the ENT and GP claim she has arthritis of the neck and shoulders.
They put her on Advil for the pain.

She has been to a chiropractor who x-rayed her neck and found some disk
degeneration in her neck. Her GP sent her to Physical Therapy 1-2x per
week.

However at the time her weakness and malaise was continuing to slowly
progress. Over several weeks the headaches disappeared and so did 90% of
the neck and shoulder pain she was suffering.

For about two weeks in late August my sister and I noticed mom getting
the "sweats" periodically, which would indicate she was dealing with a
low grade fever on and off, The tylenol which she was taking for the
head, neck and shoulder pain may have been masking the fever symptoms.

My brother in law also commented about some minor {*filter*} droop which he
noticed in mom, although neither I nor my sister can really
notice this sign now.

The GP felt she might be suffering from a cornice GI bleed causing the
anemia and acute and pronounced weakness and so sent her for a
colonoscopy to rule out polyps,
She wound up having two scopings done. Neither her GP, the internal
specialist who did the colonoscopies
or the colon/rectal surgeon seen to be able to agree on
or diagnose her condition. The colon/rectal guy wanted to operate on her
to correct a prolapsed rectum, the internal specialist says
that no way no how could that be the problem as she was not showing any
signs of that heavy a GI bleed. (The GP gave her stool smear cards
several week ago, still no word yet.) (Is this starting to sound like
the Keystone Cops? )

My cousin suggested that she might have LD based on her overall
symptoms, this is possible because she visits me out here on my
tick infested 15 acre parcel here in NJ.  I wrote the GP a letter
voicing my concerns and we took her for a LD test,  The LD  test came
back negative but the severe weakness and malaise progresses, now it's
in her legs she says she feels very weak. Getting weaker by the day.

Now the GP wants to have an upper GI cat scan done to rule out an upper
GI bleed. Seemed reasonable considering how far  we've gone to date.

My brother took mom to an internal specialist in Brooklyn today, He read
my letter describing her signs and symptoms over the
past three months and my strong suspicion of  LD. (which I still have).
He examined her for 20 minutes, spoke to her a bit,
drew {*filter*}, diagnosed her with acute inflammatory arthritis (according
to my brother) and gave her a 15 day supply of Naproxen
(anti-inflammatory, pain killer). He sent her home after telling her the
upper GI cat scan was not necessary,
and gave her some stool smear cards also. He has her going to Physical
Therapy also, starting next week.
(sounds like we are back to three months ago, doesn't it?)

A call to the Pharmacist revealed that Naproxen shouldn't be used by
someone with a suspected GI bleed, (by the way, mom canceled
the cat scan, it was supposed to be the next day, now we won't know if
she positively doesn't have a bleed)

She is home now, happily taking her medication, and claiming to be
feeling better after only one pill. I'm not convinced this is her
problem. My gut feeling is that she very well has LD and the Dr's are
too arrogant, proud and or stupid to be aware of it or properly diagnose
it.
