Having spoken with Polly Murray yesterday we touched on her and Dr.
Steere's differences in philosphies with regard to Lyme disease. They
became fast friends during the investigative and discovery stages of LD
only to drift slowly apart as she very diplomatically outlines in her book.
At one point; during a 1991 meeting in Boston the two of them "agreed
to disagree over several points."
Having just returned from last weeks conference in San Fransisco, her
obvious disappointment and concern for the mindset of many of the
attendees was evident. She was also troubled by the large number of
people with whom she had spoken to over the years, who had strikingly
similar and frustrating encounters with Dr. Steere.
Polly Murray is the trailblazer whose courageous and persistent effort
turned the medical spotlight on allowing Dr. Steere to "discover" Lyme
disease. Many people including myself are most appreciative and grateful
for her work.
An added note of interest: "The Widening Circle" has gone into it's 2nd
printing. Congratulations to Polly! It occurs to me that this is yet
another indicator of how many people are affected by LD. I truly hope
that there will be a rejoiceful sequel in the not too distant future.
