Trying for a cure, following Dr Horowitz' current protocol, I'm on
my first course of Lariam & Artemesia.  (A previous course of
Mepron, Zithro & Artemesia didn't do the job.)

Can anyone who's successfully used this protocol tell me how long
after the first round I should wait before beginning the 2nd?

Should I wait to see if symptoms re-appear, or just get re-tested?
(I know I should wait at least 2 weeks after finishing treatment).  The
cost of the tests are DEFINITELY an issue).

I'm curious about that too. I tested positive for babesiosis. I was put on 2
courses of Mepron for it. I have no idea if they did any good. Though I test
positive for it, I don't seem to have any symptoms of it. From what I've
read, it is mostly a {*filter*} illness, and what I've got is mostly a neuro
illness. I took the Mepron and saw no improvement that I could really
ascribe to the Mepron. My symptoms seem to be mostly Lyme. I wish I could
get clearer information about babesios. Some people who post on this NG have
informed me, vigorously, that I will not feel better until I have the
babesiosis fully treated, but when I go to "official" sites regarding
babesiosis, the symptoms described just don't seem to be what I have. Is it
possible to test false-positive? I've read that a lot of times people get
babesiosis but their immune system defeats it and it remains dormant for the
rest of the persons life. I don't know. Have you noticed any improvement
while you have been taking treatment for babesiosis?

The first week I was on Mepron I thought I improved, but I was also taking a
lot of Zith back then, and I think it was the Zith that made me feel better.
I think it was the Zith fighting the Lyme, rather than the Mepron fighting
babesiosis that made me feel better.

There are some symptoms of babesiosis that are just like Lyme so it gets hard
to know what is actually improving. I have responded a little better to Lyme
treatment since I did Mepron and Zith. For me, the babesiosis caused even more
fatigue and I had fevers, sweats and chills all day and night. I have fevers
with Lyme too but this was much more severe. i did three rounds of Mepron. It
is really hard to know what is what. Ask your doctor if you should still be on
something for the babesiosis. Remember, it is even newer than Lyme and they
aren't even close to knowing what to do. Unfortunately many of us will have to
use trial and error type treatment. I will see if I can find any articles on
babesiosis. If you check Lyme sites most of them have some info on
co-infections, look there.

It is new to the Lyme community or do you mean it is new to the medical
community? I thought it had been known a long while? When was it discovered?

There is also another hypothetical possibility to consider: that Mepron has an
unrecognized effect on Lyme. --Not impossible, esp. given the many similarities
that spirochetes share with protozoa, which is the type of organism Mepron is
designed to treat. I believe Dr. B has speculated about this, since some LD
patients experience herx-like responses to Mepron.  But there's no definitive
information on it and no studies have been done on this, as far as I know.

According to Taber's, babesiosis has been around (as in known to the medical
community) for quite awhile, but it had been known only as a disease gotten
by cattle, horses and dogs.  It's only recently that tests to detect the
disease in humans have been perfected.  It's related to malaria, which can
mutate quickly to become resistant to treatment, and that's why quinine
derivatives like atovaquone are used in its treatment.  That's also why it
causes malaria-like symptoms.  I've noticed that the most striking side
effect of the atovaquone, for me, has been jumpiness or nervousness and a
tendency to fumble alot.  I noticed a definite difference in the Lyme-like
symptoms as opposed to the Babesiosis symptoms (in myself, of course, since
I am the only person I can speak for).  The babesia eats your red {*filter*}
corpuscles, and the treatment is intended to get them to {*filter*}on the heme,
which is the iron left over when the rest of the {*filter*} cell is gone.

Hi, I have an appt 2/1 with a lyme literate doc.  Tested positive for
babesia in a pcr {*filter*} test in a test done by my cfids doc to get me
into a drug trial for cfids.  My question is,

Does an active babesia infection yield high iron counts in your {*filter*}?
The quote I clipped seemed like that might be the case.  I've had
extremely high iron counts since I've been sick, was told I may have
to let {*filter*} to lower my counts, was tested for some iron disease but
came out negative, was even accused of eating rust  or taking dozens
of iron supplements on purpose by one nutty doctor.

Just wondering in advance of my doc visit.

ken :)

I have babesia and I am on mepron and dynabac for 3 months.  I am not better
and my stomach hurts.  How does one get Artemesia?  Did you have to go to a
holistic doctor?  I would appreciate any information.  Glad to hear you are
better.

Thanks,
Linda

There are several species of Artemesia.  The ones I know of from working
with herbs for many years are Artemesia vulgaris (Mugwort), Artemesia
abrotanum (Southernwood) and Atremesia absinthum (Wormwood).  They all
be treated with caution, as herbs.  Especially Wormwood, as it can cause
convulsions and brain damage in high doses.  The impressionist artists of
turn of the century France would drink absinth, a liquer derived from Worm-
wood in order to get into the right "frame of mind" to do their painting.
Mugwort is safe in small doses; I often take it to regulate my menstrual
period and to calm menstrual pain.  It grows everywhere as a weed and is
the main ingredient in moxa, the compound used in Chinese medicine for
moxibustion.  This thread is the first I've heard of the use of the Arte-
mesias for tick-borne diseases.  I will be sure to ask my doctor what he
knows.  Thanks for the lead.

It sounds like you are feeling well, it's good to hear.  What was
the regime you were on of herbs.  Did you have Lyme and
Babesiosis or????  This is the 2nd time in 8 years that I have
had Lyme, and I feel horrible.  I currently am on IV Claforan,
and am very interested in killing this disease naturally.

Thanks.
