Bone Cancer - Expectancy after diagnosis.??

Someone I know, a woman in her late 60s
has recently been diagnosed with bone
cancer.  She has her first chemo treatment
about three weeks ago, and was only
recently released from the hospital. She's
pretty weak now -- barely speaks above a
whisper.

I would really appreciate knowing what the
bottom line is on her life expectancy.

Theresa, Aside from the fact that it is very difficult to give prognoses
even on our own patients, whom we've examined, it's very difficult, to
offer estimates of life expectancy in situations like the one you
describe. Most importantly, though, "bone cancer" is not enough
info--many tumors metastasize to bone and their prognosis depends partly
on where the primary tumor was. Other bone cancers can be further
subdivided into cell type of origin, and these too, imply different
biologic behavior. Finally, some people loosely refer to multiple myeloma
as "bone cancer" and yet it is a hematologic cancer with fairly good
response rates to simple chemotherapy... H2
