 ancient burial mounds in ireland

so there are these fabulous burial mounds approx. an hour west of
dublin, three of them, lined up with each other, at approx. mile-long
intervals, and the sun, so their central passage is flooded with with
light at the dawn of the summer equinox.  they are older than the
pyramids in egypt, yet seem to get much less international attention
except perhaps to bolster celtic fairy tales.  how can you account for
what i perceive as a lack of interest? granted, if i hadn't seen them
myself, i might not care one way or the other...

cheers,
caroline

Well, the pyramids are an awesome sight.  They photograph very well.
How well do the Irish mounds photograph?  It is also very hard to make
a bad photograph of Stonehenge (although I've actually seen one
recently taken from too far away and showing the ugly wire fence
around it).  Perhaps both of these monuments get attention because
there is something there that resonates with the human need for
beauty.

I suspect that they didn't offer as much wealth as the pyramids.  Not that the burial mounds
are any less important - I personnaly find them much more interesting than the Egyptians.
Maybe Irish prehistory isn't politically correct either...if it is I don't care it's still more
interesting

Newgrange photographs very well indeed if you have any skill with a
camera, sadly I haven't been to the other two sites so am unable to
comment.

Newgrange is actually more impressive/interesting on the _inside_,
that was surely more important to whoever built it 5000 years ago.
Stonehenge was obviously intended to look impressive from a distance,
as were the pyramids (which of course are also rather fancy inside and
damned handy for keeping those razor blades sharp!).
