VERTICAL FRACTURE - From Fracture to Crown.

Hi again

Further to postings of 27May and 4June
VERTICAL FRACTURE PROGNOSIS

Present state of tooth at gum level:
 ---
<- minor or part root here
|
|                |    <- complete root(s) here
--------------

Fill in the gaps with straight lines and you have what remains of tooth at
gum level.

So the loose portion of the tooth was removed, and with it a whole root - or
a major part of the root.

An abscess was present on the end of the root - ball of tissue dangling at
root end.

I had 2-3 days of slight soreness, and after two weeks things have healed
up - infection cleared, gum healed.

The x-ray shows that some root remains at the extraction site - a minor root
or part root - half to two-thirds the depth of the original.

Outcome - the dentist proposes a full crown.

Having got this far I would prefer to keep the tooth vital - so on to the
next round of risk/benefit analysis.

What are the chances of infection with crowning on undrained roots, and is
this significantly less likely with root-canalled preparatrion ?

How will the crown bed in with gum/socket/bone where there is now no tooth ?
Is there an increased risk of infection here, say with trapped cooking.net">food
particles ?

Is mechanical retention (with pins) the main advantage of root-canals ?

What is the likely lifespan of  a drained crowned tooth versus a vital
crowned tooth?

Thanks again, John.
