Unclear diagnosis-Fractured tooth vs. severed nerve

A relative of mine has been experiencing great pain in several of her bottom
teeth for about 3 months now, and no one has been able to make a clear
diagnosis of what the problem exactly is, although both fractured teeth and a
severed central nerve of the bottom jaw have been suggested as possible causes
by both her dentist and maxillo{*filter*} surgeon.  She recently went to see a so
called "expert" in jaw pain management, but he turned out to be an incompetent.
So my question is-what kind of doctor should my relative see about this kind
of pain-and are there any top specialists in this field in the NY/NJ/CT area?
Emails would be appreciated-Thanks.
