 Choosing Dental School and Specialty

Hi,

Everyone in this newsgroup talks about how to keep the costs low while
getting the best education possible,  and I for one, agree with this.
But I was wondering if I should decide to go to an instate school
eventhough I am 100% sure I want to go to a specialty program?

I have accepted to BU, NYU, Temple and VCU (which is my instate
school).  I know for sure BU and NYU have better specialization
programs.  What I don't know is if by going to VCU, I am compromising
my chances of getting into their programs in future.

Please let me know,
RJ

Specialty schools are starting to accept only those students that have GPR
or private practice experience.  The number 6 student (highest that applied
to my school) was not accepted into ours or any other ortho program.  A guy
the year ahead of me (not even in top 1/3 of his class) was accepted to an
ortho program after a 1-year GPR--of course his dad being an orthodontist
didn't hurt!

The only speciality program I am really familier with is ortho (I teach in a
program).  Right now, ortho is so competitive that no one and I mean no one can
start dental school expecting to pick the speciality school of their choice
unless you walk on water.

And if you do specialize, why not start with minimum debt before graduate
school.  I personally know ortho residents who have dental school and ortho
residency debt of $275,000 before they opened their practice.  Ortho is good
but not that good.

Believe me cheaper is best.

Dear RJ,
It does not matter where you go to dental school. If you wish to specialize all
you have to do is be personable, and get outstanding grades. This has to be
done from the beginning of school. You will establish yourself as a particular
type of student early on.  Believe me...get the grades, and you'll get your
specialty, unless you are completely obnoxious.
You don't need to be particularly picky about your dental school, you are
better off being selective about your specialty school.
So,
(1) go to your state school if you can get in,
(2) get great grades.
Any othecomments/questions let me know.
Best Wishes,
JDC
