NEWS RELEASE Brockovitch Attorney Takes on American Dental Establishment April 22, 2001 For Immediate Release Los Angeles/Washington- Allan Sigel, one of the attorneys involved in the now famous Erin Brockovitch case has upped the anti and is making history again through a Class Action Lawsuit that is sure to change the face of dentistry in America. At a News Conference scheduled for Tuesday morning at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., details of a Class Action Lawsuit will be released that will shake the foundation of the American Dental Establishment. According to Mr. Sigel, "at issue is the patients right to informed consent and the right of the patient to know if a well known toxic substance is being put into his mouth." Although this class action is against dentists themselves, "it is only the beginning" states Sigel, "Similar actions are being aggressively pursued that will reach the manufacturers, associations and dental licensing boards, with experts predicting claims in the many hundreds of billions of dollars on the 'Silver Filling-Informed Consent' issue alone." The NEWS CONFERENCE is scheduled for April 24 at 9:30 A.M. in the West Room of the National Press Club in Washington D.C. Full media kits will be provided to all accredited members of the press. Limited attendance is available.

Who else would have an ego big enough ? Noticed he's being quiet today ... hopefully he's realizing he's a mortal person like the rest of us non-DDS's ... and not a Dental Deity as he has falsely lead himself to believe ... hopefully too, he's doing something about his obsession with Ms. Drew and myself ...

I'm sure glad I don't do them. I walked in a colleagues office this last weekend in California and saw her posting of telling patients that some substances are toxic. Right as you walk in. Now what patient would want an amalgam? Bizarre.. fmn -- Practice win-win or no deal. (Stephen R. Covey)

Also, Mercury is neurologically just as toxic as Chromium (the subject of Brockovich story and movie) is to the body. Both in small amounts. Wouldn't it be logical that there would be an effect in fillings (as vapor is released each time we chew gum or chewy food) in the mouth, a mucous membrane area more permeable than the skin? fmn -- Practice win-win or no deal. Dr. Nelson, don't you believe the EPA when they tell you that amalgams and the mercury therein are perfectly safe - as long as they are in either your mouth or the biohazard bin. Is there any other substance so classified? Louis Quote:

WOW............either the mouth where one can breath the vapors, and it leaks into the body or the biohazard bin. What a choice................. That in it's self should be a pretty strong clue! Jan

Ironic, isn't it :-) How about what we learned in dental school why we polish: If the amalgam doesn't corrode, then it lasts longer, because during corrosion, as the mercury vapor is released, the physical properties of the amalgam change. However, as the ADA states now, the mercury is bound up in the amalgam and is therefore not a threat. Did you ever wonder why we go to such lengths to protect the dentin and its direct tubule connection with the pulp, to the {*filter*} vessels, to the nerves in the tooth to the fifth cranial nerve to the brain (hmmmmm...), but no! Copalite to the rescue! It is such a great sealing material coupled with the oxidation layer/corrosion layer of the amalgam, the body is protected, so their can be no way mercury can harm you, right? If nothing else, this issue can show how few people reason out what they do and do what is the status quo and path of least resistance. now it sounds like the path of most resistance may be started with this lawsuit. fmn -- Get up in the morning, do the best you can, go to bed at night. Frank-- At NYU, in our dental materials science course, corrosion was not related to loss of mercury. It was the silver that corroded. Also, no one told us that polishing prevents corrosion. It merely work-hardened the alloy, lessening the amount of "ditching" Steve

First, let me ask you. What is your understanding of the chemistry of the Gamma one and Gamma two phases? second, a polished metal surface doesn't corrode as much as an unpolished one, why wouldn't it work in the mouth? Burnishing also work hardens and is better than polishing due to heat developed during polishing (vaporizing mercury:-) Again, are you saying there is no hazard from mercury in the mouth? What is your position. regards fmn -- Get up in the morning, do the best you can, go to bed at night. (Gordon B. Hinckley, President, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints)

Dr Frank, Thank you so much for your contribution on this ng. I didn't know that is what dentist were taught. So any dentist knows that mercury vapors are released, but never stopped to think how toxic this is?? Rather just go with the flow and not question all this? Seems very strange to me. Very little. I don't remember learning about them in dental materials science, and I searched in vain for a mention in Skinner's Science of Dental Materials (Phillips). I think I first heard of them after the introduction of Dispersalloy. Quote: > second, a polished metal surface doesn't corrode as much as an unpolished > one, why wouldn't it work in the mouth?
Phillips states it does work. He states: If an amalgam restoration is highly polished after it has throughly hardened, its resistance to corrosion is greatly increased. The voids and pits left on the surface after carving provide opportunity for concentration cell corrosion. The elimination of these irregularities by polishing reduces the possibility of such cells being formed. Although he allows that burnishing is not the evil it was once thought to be, he does not claim superiority to polishing. He mentions burnishing as including going over the just carved surface with a prophy cup and paste. He does stress minimizing heat, whether during burnishing after carving or polishing after complete setting. The rationale is not prevention of the liberation of mercury vapor, but diminishing the formation of a mercury-rich zone at the margin which contributes to creep and ditching. The tarnished layer, according to Phillips, is primarily tin sulfide, with small amounts of tin oxide present. He also states, Mercury, per se, does not influence tarnish...However, restorations with high mercury content result in surface deterioration which then accelerates discoloration. Guys,,,,,,, Polishing reduces surface area. Plain and simple. Less surface area, less metal exposed, leading to less surface corrosion. No effect on the hardness. Gamma 1 & 2 were important in the alloys used in the sixties and early seventies. Modern alloy do not develop the high mercury phase which is expressed to the surface by condensation. Continue the debate, though. I am enjoying it. Steve =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Stephen Mancuso, D.D.S.
