 cleaning for bacterial infection

"The dentist may refer you to a periodontist, a specialist who treats
gum diseases.  A periodontist may perform flap surgery to remove tartar
deposits in deep pockets or to reduce the periodontal pocket and make
it easier for the patient, dentist, and hygienist to keep the area
clean.  This common surgery involves lifting back the gums and removing
the tartar.  The gums are then sutured back in place so that the tissue
fits snugly around the tooth again."

I hope that helps. :)

Since your general dentist already made a referral to a periodontist,
I'm inclined to think you should have a periodontal consult.  The
periodontist should be able to keep your general dentist informed, and
refer you back if indicated.
