b/cs _some_ of us would like to know.... _Some_ of us have developed an
expertise in one or another discipline of Dentistry and _some_ others of
us are only too happy to observe how it's done. This arose out of some
questions I raised re: how to sterilize files and when to throw them
away.
Cheers and thanks W_B

How do you curve the this much? Between thumb and fingers? Butting it
against the tray? This seems to be a made-to-measure curve for the
mesial root of a 1st molar. IIRC, you curve them this way up till file #
15, correct?
Thanks

Yep. Was taught to use the end of a damp cotton roll,
but I just use my fingers.

Nope. That would tend to cause a kink.

You've got it.

gotcha....don't they make a tool to bend files nice and smooth?

No, this:

http://www.endobuchanan.com/products/access.html

The last item on the page is the Endo-Bender which will give a kinkless bend
to the file

I don't know.  I think I'm with WB here.  I like Buchanan, but this
looks like a product for sissies, not manly men doing manly things and
womenly women doing womenly things.

If someone lacks the dexterity to bend a file by hand, should they be doing
RCT?

I never have pre-bent files.  I use #8, #10 and #15 for quite a long time.
Then, I try taking #20 to length and finish up.  Working the tiny files real
well avoids ledging and the files are so flexible that they follow the c{*filter*}
automatically.  On withdrawal, you can generally see the bend of the c{*filter*}
on the #10 or #15.  Usually the bends are only in the apical 1/5 of the
root.

....Working like this, I think you'd like the SafeSider files of
Musikant. I think they are  hand files from begining to end.

CT Ruddle says to use GG's in a brushing motion, rather than try to dig
with them.

HOLY MACKEREL-Aaaa... You take a GT file series 30 or 40 into an MB1 or
MB2???  IOW, you open the apex of that root to a #30 or 40????

Very good point...

No.... But then you wouldn't want to send a rotating bent file down a
root c{*filter*}anyways...

If you say so.

Yep for MB1, If you prepare the c{*filter*}in the manner described,
the 30/.04 will usually go to length. if not drop to the 20 series.
A 40 sure, in large canals, usually younger folks.

MB2 ?  I usually hand file these or use the pro-tapers.
20 series is what I would recommend to others.
Sometimes you can get these to a 30.

Age of the patient is usually a factor in the size of the canal,
but not always.
