 "Fingerprint signatures" in usenet

How many of you make use of a "fingerprint signature" in your postings?
Like a watermark, "fingerprints" in our posts can be very useful.
There could be a particular word I use that always follows another
word, or a particular punctuation mark that I make use of or don't make
use of in each and every post; it too may be linked to another word or
series of words.  There are all sorts of possibilities.  The point is,
if I were concerned that others might want to "pretend to be me
posting", these tools might be useful when it comes to some sort of
evidence of my writing style if I needed to defend my position
somewhere along the line.

That's about all I have to offer on this subject for now.  Maybe many
of you have already given this some thought and maybe some of you have
no idea what I'm talking about at all.  Either way, I know what I'm
talking about and I know there is at least one other person around here
who does too; and probably more than just one other.

If any of you are wondering what my fingerprint is ... I can't tell
you.  It's a secret.  If you figure it out or think you have, please
let me know.  I'd be very interested.

Well, for what it is worth, I know Sabra is no longer on line, but I
_do_ know that many of the dudes over on comp.sys.mac.apps use
fingerprints in their sigs and it is for just the reason mentioned by
her: to be able to prove that it was one poster and not an imposter who
said something.

I believe they can be useful also for copyright purposes; as in for
instance, if Sabra wished to quote from The Book here or over in
alt.support.jaw.disorders, no one could subsequently take the quote and
claim ownership of it. Sabra would always be able to prove that her post
was the original one because of the sig.

Again, without wanting to start a war, if I was one or two of the other
posters on UseNet, such as SWNMNBM, I would definitely have a
fingerprint signature. Then no other poster could impersonate her.

Cheers

But at least you could _prove_ you weren't stalking or impersonating
that individual.
