 obsessively brushing teeth

Every day, I brush my teeth in the evening for about fif{*filter*} minutes. First I
clean the upper teeth, on the inside, then round to the outside. Then I clean
the lower teeth, although it's a bit hard to reach the ones at the end. I've
been doing this for about six months. I take Paxil 60mg for OCD, but it only
partly helps.

Is anyone else in the same situation as me? How do you rescue yourself from
this? Can you somehow convince youself of the unworthiness of excessive
toothbrushing? Is there anything "real world" i.e. not medication which can be
done to help cease the obsession?

just stop doing it obsessively.. force yourself.. and see how your mind adjusts to
it over time.. you are aware it is obsessive

I do this to a lesser extent. Try setting a timer and reducing the time your
allowed to brush. I did somethign similar for my problem which was a numbers
complusion. I'd count on some many teeth and then brush really fast while not
paying attention to how many times and thinking about somethgin unrelated to
timing and number of times. Mostly I thought about calculus.

I don't know anything much about dentistry or OCD but is 15 minutes once per
day obsessive?

Perhaps you can set a timer and limit yourself  to 3  minutes. Too much
brushing can erode the enamel off your teeth.

Still cool.

Why rescue? It is a good habit.

I do about 2 minutes morning and after dinner.  Sometimes after lunch or
before going out someplace if need be.  Sometimes skip it if I'm tired or
forget.  ~  But then, I tend to be pretty lax and lazy about most things.

But still, to me, 15 minutes once a day seems like someone that is just is
concerned about their teeth or a little more concientious than "normal."
Now if you said brushing 8 times a day or brushing for 30 minutes twice a
day - I'd start to think that was a bit over kill.  Even 15 minutes twice a
day seems, to me, like just a very concerned an maybe someone that needs
somethings else to do - but still not tooooo far out.

Actually, I wonder if origional poster would be comfortable with 8 minutes
twice a day.  That would probably be more beneficial to the teeth, still be
an extra minute over the 15.

Again, this is just personal opionion for a semi-reasonably aware/adjusted
{*filter*}.  I have no training in dentistry or mental health areas.

I'm not trying to be funny, but brush your teeth as if your house is
on fire.
Myself, I brush my teeth as if it were a NASA mission.

Blzbub,
I have the opposite problem.  I have to have the water running so I can
rinse the brush off after every brush - the thought of saliva does me in
every time.  I{*filter*}if I try to brush too long and if the brush touches my
tongue - I'm done immediately.
But, if you are brushing too much, and I'm not brushing enough, does
that make things even?  Probably not, but it was worth a shot anyway.
Some of the behavior techniques, like setting a timer, might help, but
you are going to have to be stern with yourself.  You can brush after every
meal, but only for three to five minutes, and when the timer goes off you
HAVE to stop.  If stopping causes you anxiety, realize that it will pass,
and try to distract yourself by doing something else.
    Take care,
    Lachryma
