Black covering over the back of teeth?

Hi,

My girlfriend has what appears to be black coverings over the back of
all her teeth.  The teeth appear fine from the front, but appear black
on the back (only really visible when she opens her mouth to laugh,
yawn, eat etc).

She mentioned to me recently that the dentist had put some sort of
covering over the back of her teeth when she was a young girl and that
it had remained since then, leaving this black appearance of the back
of her teeth.

Can anyone identify what this might have been, or explain it further
to me?  When I first noticed this, it initially bothered me - but now
she has explained what it was (and that it isn't rot) I am not so
bothered by it.  However I would like to understand what kind of
covering a dentist might have added and why it would leave this
appearance, and if there is anything she can do to have it removed?

Much appreciated,

Guy.

Is it metal that has 'turned' black or what? Is it on the back of her front
teeth only?

Probably had sealants placed at some time.  And probably needs a good
prophy.

Thanks for the feedback but I still don't understand - can anyone be
more specific?  What is a "prophy" and "Peridex"?  Would a "prophy"
get rid of the black?

My girlfriend isn't (and has never been) bullemic as far as I know.
She is a healthy weight so I really don't think it is that.

I think it is on the back of all her teeth - top and bottom.

Anymore advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes

Prophy is short for prophylaxis - a dental cleaning.

Sealants are protective coverings put on the pits and fissures of a tooth,
typically, but not restricted to the chewing surfaces of the teeth.  I'm
guessing this is what she had done.

Peridex is a prescription mouth rinse to aid in treating periodontal (gum)
problems - it has potential to leave a stain that can be removed with a
prophy.

Does she smoke?

You got me wondering how that might be significant. What are you thinking
of? Something in the diet, genetic predisposition, developmental anomaly
...?

Prophy means "tooth cleaning." If its an accumulation of "something"
on the teeth, prophy is the ticket. We have ultrasonic devices to
vibrate off the black.

Peridex is some mnouthrine (Rx - prescription item) that patients love
because they think it helps prevent gum disease. Dentists hate it
because the teeth turn black as you described, but on the fronts,
between the teeth as well.

Thanks,
Figure 14 on the page below shows it well:
http://www.***.com/
Google show a lot of links relating Betel nut use to {*filter*}cancer.

Something I will have to keep in mind as the demographics of my
neighbourhood are shifting yet again.
