 Krispy-Kremes

188 people are interested enough to give an opinion about their donut. How
many will even tolerate a discussion about teeth?

Weird, huh?

Not weird. Try to understand the inner secrets of a donut and its
profound impact on the population (especially policemen on break)

I pray that Krispy-Kreme never makes it to W. Palm Beach.  My belly, my
cholesterol count and my teeth would never survive!  I understand that Jimmy
Buffet (who lives here) has purchased the local rights; but fortunately he
has a short attention span and we do not yet have any under construction.

Joel--

I don't know how many newsgroups you have been involved in.  But there
are people in all the ng I've watched that have posters who could charitably
called overly enthusiastic.
This is the only group I regularly post to.  Considering the sheer
volume of your postings here, the fact that you also practice dentistry, read
the newspaper, and have a family, I can scarcely believe you have time for
anything else, let alone other newsgroups.
But I regularly watch newsgroups related to my other interests, mostly
bicycling and guitar.  The most civil groups are not necessarily the ones you'd
expect.  Perhaps the nastiest posts are on rec.bicycles.racing (not
unexpectedly--lots of young testosterone).  Even as a dentist, I was not
initially prepared for the bile I occasionally found here.  And I was certainly
unprepared for the not-rare nastiness of rec.music.classical.guitar!  (The most
civil are rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic and rec.bicycles.rides).
But I don't think I should have been unprepared for the emotion here.  I'm
struck by how many patients ask questions here that should be asked of their
dentist, and wonder, in fact, if they did ask their dentist and didn't believe
him/her.
It doesn't surprise me (having worked in some high-volume offices) that a
patient could have doubts about what they hear (or don't hear!) from their
dentist.  Of course, many potential patients never make it in our doors, and we
may hear from them here.
Many patients who post here ask questions I hear in my office every day.
What I don't hear every day is the very heavy overlay of doubt and even paranoia
of (it seems to me) a disproportionate number of postings here.
I wonder if any of the patients or dental personnel out there could share
their thoughts about why that might be.  For instance, I can understand why a
patient might not trust a dentist's pronouncements on the safety of silver
amalgam, but I can't for the life of me understand what the profession has to
gain by the promotion of fluoride.
Since I live with a wife who places an annoying (to me) faith (I use that
term advisedly) in alternative therapies, I know there is a tremendous mistrust
out there of the medical professions.  I share much of this mistrust.  But I
still don't understand the new crises in confidence in dentistry that seem to be
arising almost daily (you know--we poison our patients with mercury, fluoride,
give them cancer with x-rays, infect them with HIV with inadequate sterilization
procedures, transmit Legionnaire's disease in our water lines,  give them
hepatitis, cause multiple system failure by doing root canals and retaining
"dead roots", fleece them with unnecessary treatment, etc, etc.).
Where are we going wrong?  Or are there just a handful of noisemakers that
can be answered at need or ignored?

Steve

Hi Steve,

You wrote (about Joel)

Quote:

That mystery has been debated off and on since I been here (4 years).
We haven't solved it yet.

Quote:
>I can understand why a patient might not trust a dentist's pronouncements

Intrigueing issue that has struck my mind too. From the business side
of dentistry fluoridation is counterproductive.

Quote:

>I still don't understand the new crises in confidence in dentistry that seem
>to be arising almost daily (you know--we poison our patients with mercury ...

I think the attitude of the profession towards those who are worried over
something in our profession, is what causes the increasing sense of mis-
trust. Take Joel M Eichen, he's a good example. I cannot count how many
he has made suspicious over the amalgam issue. The attitude he present
is not all that uncommon, and the result is a production of anti-amalgam
individuals. Many of his comments I have read without answering, I just sit
back and smile since I know Joel does not realise how counterproductive
against his own viewpoints his comments sometimes are. People are not
stupid, they read between the lines.

The core of this issue is that the dental profession should not dismiss
issues with an attitude of "We know all".  People, consumers, have
grown too smart for that. So we really can't, or should, ignore anyone.

Hans

Hans--

Perhaps it's Joel's very understandable (to me, anyway) sarcasm re the
amalgam issue.  The dentists will no doubt pick up on it immediately.  Those
predisposed to suspicion will just find it grist for the mill.
Most of us on either side of the issue are largely preaching to the choir.
If we're not trusted, we're not going to change any minds in either direction.
The question is, if this mistrust is truly widespread, as I suspect, how did
we get here--and how do we open the lines of communication so that we can trust each
other?

Good comments. I wonder many of these same things myself ....

More to follow on this topic.

Steve,

Interesting and well put comments on NGs.....Things I've thought about
myself.  The diversity of character of each NG continues to amaze me as
well.

Those who feel strong emotions about any subject are usually those who are
motivated to put in the effort of writing.  Plus, due to the relative
anonimity of a NG, it is the perfect vehicle for unleashing those emotions
that people wouldn't dare to release face to face.  Thus, voila, a
proliferation of emotional responses!?

Again see above comments.  Of course, paranoia by its very nature suggests
the extreme.

Mira--

Nothing like vicious psycho classical guitar players snapping their
G-strings at each other!  (the mercury and fluoride stuff is getting kinda old,
though!)

Steve,

Hmmm......maybe I should consider subscribing....There ain't nothing
happening like that on my rec.music makers. bowed strings ng.  (Yeah...and
this mercury/fluoride haggling is like talking religion and politics....it's
my policy to strictly avoid debating that stuff.)  How come you get all the
fun? ;-)

Mira--

Not really that much fun.  But then I'm not one of those people who gawk
at traffic accidents.  Still, there are some good people there--but I don't
recall any Swedes.

Steve--

That's 'cause Joel keeps Hans hopping on *this* NG.  If Hans wants to keep
on top of things here I don't think he can allow himself the luxury of any
other hobbies!  LOL.

Funny!

Real funny. Just as funny as a semi-trailer collision. Don't gawk!

Hans--

Perhaps my post was poorly constructed.  Did you see it as an
insult?  BTW, there have been some fine Swedish classical guitarists!

Hi Steve,

On my computer it came out as "Still, there are some good
people there--but I don't recall any Swedes." i.e "being good people".

Hey, that semi-trailer was a semi-joke, too.

Hans
