 premature or skipped heart beats

Im 21 and I have premature or skipped heart beats according to my
cardiologist.  Ive felt these for about 2-3 years.  They would occure
intermittently.  Sometimes I would get them a couple of times a week and
then I wouln't get them for months.  But recently they have gotten worse.
My heart does different things.  It comes over me all of a sudden and it
feels like my heart is fluttering or doing flip flops.  It kind of takes
my breath away.  It lasts a few seconds but it feels like my heart is
going to explode.  It is very scary.  Ive had ekgs, echo, heart monitor
but no {*filter*} tests done.  The other tests were all normal.  On the heart
monitor the premature beats did show up.  But the cardiologist said it was
okay and quite common.  I used to be very active up to two years ago.  I
never feel these when Im excersing.  I have gaind some weight due to a
back injury and now Im inactive.  My father had similar attacks when he
was my age.  He is 60 now and doesn't have them any more.  Im afraid Im
going to have a heart attack or something.  My mother also has an
underactive thyroid.  I asked my primary care doctor that perhaps I have
mild hypothyroidism.  My hands and feet are always cold and whenever they
take my temperature it is always a few degrees below normal.  She said no.
Perhaps Im defeceint in some mineral or vitamin.  I just dont know.
Because of the attacks I suffered a panic attack.  Now Im full with
anxiety about them.  This anxiety may be perpetuating them.  I was never
anxious about them before, only when they started becoming different, more
frequent and stronger.  Perhaps my lack of exercise has caused my heart to
become weaker and more susceptible.  Please if anybody can help me and let
me know of some way I can get rid of them.  Im afraid theyre life
threatening, but my cardiologist said that they are very common and are
okay.  I need to know that i will be okay and that thet are quite common.
Also, will they cause me to be susceptible to heart attacks later in life.
I don't think anybody in my family has had a heart attack.  Neither of my
grandparents did.  Please somebody help.  Im completely stressed and
anxious.  They are very scary.  Perhaps if I exercise more, my heart will
become stronger and they will go away.  I have cut caffeine out of my diet
and I don't drink that much.  I do eat sweets.  If anybody has any
information or if somebody has the same thing i have let me know.   My
cardiologist did not say I had PVCs, he simply said premature heart beats
or skipped beats.  They probably are the same thing.  They happen to me at
all different times and frequencies.
 Please Help
      Thanks

Hi Amy,

I was where you are now about 4 years ago. This all hapened about the
time my son was born. as it turns out, I have a trace of Mitral Valve
Prolapse (MVP), and your symptoms are those of a person with MVP.

You should get an echo cardiogram to be certain, as a trip to the dentist
without antibiotics is dangerous for persons with MVP.

How do you cure MVP? as it turns out, MVP is very common amoung women, and
most don't even know they have it. It's not life threatening, and is more a
pain than anything else. Your symptoms will come and go, and certain things
can make it worse. Caffiene, stress, {*filter*}.

I'd first get the echo to be certain.

By the way, you should get some medication for the anxiety. I was put
on xanax, and the stuff will do the job. My PVCs can be cure with
a calcium channel blocker, but I don't like the side effects, and have
been able to control the PVCs by decreasing stress. Meditation can really
help. when you feel the attacks, think of peacefull scenes like a stream
in the woods or something.

Yours sounds like a classic case of MVP Syndrome.  I've had many of
the same problems.  My doctor gave me a copy of an excellent article that
you should try to find -- it will put your mind at ease.  "MITRAL VALVE
PROLAPSE SYNDROME 1990: Appropriate diagnosis is the key to a happy
patient"  by Phillip C. Watkins, MD and Richard O. Russell Jr, MD in
ILLUSTRATED MEDICINE 1990 Volume 5 Number 2.  Good luck and don't worry.

Amy these extra beats can come from either the top chambers of the heart
called
PAC's or premature atrial contractions or they can come from the bottom
chambers of the heart called PVC's - premature ventricular contractions.
They are common and do not by themselves cause heart attacks which is a
different problem namely narrowing of the arteries. These extra beats are
aggravated by stress, fatigue, stimulants like caffiene and decongestants
in cold medications.
The only time they are a concern is they are sometimes associated with
heart racing (tachycardia). Anxiety makes them worse. Often they are by
themselves and your heart is otherwise healthy. Sometimes other conditions
like MVP can be associated. It might be best that you see your doc or
cardiologist. Short term  treatment with certain {*filter*} can help. from kids
peds cardiologist.
