Your wife's primary physician (hopefully a board-certified internist)
probably has already recommended a low fat/cholesterol diet that is high
in fiber, regular exercise, and if she is post-menopausal, estrogen
replacement was probably also considered.  Perhaps in 3 to 6 months,
s/he will recheck your wife's cholesterol and provide additional
recommendations that will depend on the results.

Yup, couldn't hurt.  BUT, if she also has low HDL and high triglycerides
(familial combined hyperlipidemia rather than simple
hypercholesterolemia), I suggest you read a copy of "Protein Power" by
Dr. Eades and consider the low-carb alternative.  Otherwise you might
frustrate yourself and waste time discovering that a low-fat, low-chol
diet doesn't help at all, and/or your doctor might put her on a drug
that works but is controversial -- and do you want to be on a drug
anyway if you can avoid it?

Sorry to keep harping about the low-carb alternative, but...  I've been
there, done that, and it bugs me when it is not mentioned as a reality
for certain hyperlipidemias.  If you want details, send me email.

Oh, and even for hypercholesterolemia, it's not a sure bet that low-fat
is the right answer.  See what the Chairperson of the Department of
Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health had to say about this
recently:
