Pediatric Valve Replacement Surgery - Info required

I am the father of a 14 month old boy who is likely to require aortic valve
replacement surgery before he is 18 months old.  He is diagnosed with
aortic stenosis.

Our cardiologist is being helpful with descriptions of options available
and answering any questions but I'm after more.

Can anyone give me a pointer to a place where I might find information on
this procedure and it's effects on young children ?  Life expectancy of
the replacement valve (I'm told 10-15 years) ? Post-op requirements ?
Complications ? Side effects ?

Anyone have any personal experiences in this matter, either themselves or
their kids ?

I'd appreciate anything that anyone can tell me.  My wife and I are very
worried, all medical assurances aside.

Steve.

Steve,  Go to your local library, bookstore or wherever you can find it
and checkout or buy the book "The Heart of a Child" by Catherine Neill.
It's a book written for families of kids with heart conditions and it's
the best I've found so far.

I have a a 12 year old daughter with tetrology of fallot w/pulmonary
artresia which (in a nutshell) is no pulmonary valve, VSD, aortic arch,
among other things.  She's had surgery 3 times, once closed heart and two
open heart (both involving putting in homograft [human] valves).
Although we live just outside of Atlanta, all three operations have been
done at Mayo Clinic.

Really, do get this book first.  It will answer lots of questions.

Where do you live?  What hospital, etc. does your child use?

Feel free to e-mail me for any questions, etc.  I know very well what
it's like for you guys now.  BTW, my daughter is very healthy, a little
thin, but you wouldn't suspect that there's anything like this wrong with
her.

Good luck...   Marcie

Marcie, I was reading you response to Steve's posting on Aortic Stenosis.
On 1/3/96, my daughter had her third surgery for pulmonary atresia. The
surgery was done at UCLA by Dr. Hillel Laks.  It was definitive repair
following 2 bi-lateral unifocalizations 13 months apart.  Rachael is 3
1/2, and is doing great. This surgery involved, among other things, the
use of a valved aortic homograft.  I noted your daughter had several valve
replacements and I am glad that she is doing well.  I'm curious at what
ages did she need a replacement.  What were the indications for a valve
replacement?

Thank you for your reply.
