Strange Clonidine side effects

 Strange Clonidine side effects

I have been titrating Clonidine upwards to currently .1 mg/day (a low dose,
but I am working to get up to a dose that would let me utilize the patch).
This is being used to treat an autonomic nervous system disease (postural
orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) which is affecting my circulation.  Since
I also tend to get hyperadrenergic severe hypertensive burts, this is being
added to my small dose of laebetalol to try and prevent that from happening.

I expected it to be relaxing, but instead the opposite has occured:

My muscles are very tight, incuding severe tension headaches
I get shakey and sometimes chills (this I got before clonidine because of
some autonomic nervous system problems--but now it is worse)
Increased GI motility (loose stools and diahrrea)

These side effects seem to be the opposite of what one would expect from
clonidine.  It feels like my already hyperactive sympathetic nervous sytem
is being accelerated instead of decelerated.  It is like my body is upset
that I am trying to lower {*filter*} pressure and heart rate and is trying to
override clonidine's effects.  I was looking forward to a nice
parasympathetic relaxation, but instead I am bouncing off the walls.  This
sucks.  I am not sure what to do.  Will this get better?  Should I just ride
it out?

Any input or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

I didn't find clonidine relaxing at all when I was on it. The clonidine
might not be entirely to blame though. Perhaps it's the combination with
labetolol that's the problem.

 Strange Clonidine side effects
Wayne, thank you for your response.  OK, I am a bit confused.  I thought the
sympathetic nervous sytem was the "poop and run" (like fear causing one to
mess their pants), and the parasympathetic system was "eat, relax, and
absorb." which slows down the GI tract to absorb food.  Wayne, I have found
a lot of information on how the sympathtetic and parasympathetic system
affects smooth muscle.  What about striated muscle (i.e. muscle tension)?

Thank you for your information--it is very valuable to me, and I appreciate
it very much!

Thanks,

Mike
