The likelihood of potential side effects of lipid lowering medications depends on the medication and what other medical problems you have. -- Andrew Chung http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~achung

It amazes me how many people take {*filter*} long-term and DON'T care to know much about them. If you do, the way to find out is to ask the doctor or pharmacist to let you read or photocopy from the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference). Here you'll find lots of great, detailed information about clinical testing on the drug, how it works, indications, contraindications, side effects, etc. It helps to know some medical and biological terms and concepts. You can also ask the pharmacist for the "package insert', which reproduces the same information in about 4-point text on a long, skinny piece of paper. Read it with a magnifier. :-) You can also find "layman-style" write-ups of a subset of the same information in various books. Again, ask the doctor or pharmacist. Bear in mind the following... Different people are, well, different, and have different reactions to the same {*filter*}. And not every possible risk or side-effect listed is going to necessarily happen to YOU. If you're really hard-core, look up the generic name of your drug in Medline and read abstracts of clinical studies involving it.

All that information pales beside a few real life experiences with a drug. As a sufferer of dilated cardiomyopathy (EF = 13%), and a migraine sufferer, I attest to this. I have studied enough articles from hospitals' medical libraries to put a scholar to shame. Real life Rx users have been much more valuable sources of information. Jon

I'd have to mention increased flatulence. -- Nick Buckle "I don't believe {*filter*}ity is as common as it used to be"

In addition to the advice in Mr. Silverstein's insightful post, you also may want to check the PharmInfo site: http://www.***.com/ references on the medications, and medical information pertaining to related conditions, all written with the layman in mind. A further excellent reference is the Mayo Clinic Heart Book, available at most leading book shops and libraries, which is a complete reference on the causes and treatment of various forms of heart disease; must reading for anyone with any degree of arterial or cardiac disorder, IMHO. BTW, a very short version of a direct answer to your question is, depending on the specific medication, you and your doctor have to be concerned about watching for any deleterious effect on the liver. Good Luck! Mark Federman

I tolerated 10 mg doses of Zocor but the bottom fell out when I went up to 20 mg. My hair, already fine and thin, was falling out in alarming amounts; dry, scaling skin developed; insomnia was frequent as was night-time dizziness when turning over in bed; vague abdominal cramps became a part of daily life. These things all stopped almost as soon as I stopped taking Zocor. It should be understood that I am a 65 year old female who at 4' 10" weighs only 91 pounds (my lifelong fighting-weight!) which may explain why the 20 mg dosage was too much. I will soon start again on 10 mg and hope for the best. Good luck!

I have been on Zocor for nearly 2 months. May have lowered my tot chol from around 200 to 160 (estimate as there is no previous data). only complaint is excess gas (intestinal). I have been told that regular {*filter*} tests are in order to detect other less obvious problems. jim
