 Sore throat/cold lasting longer

I have had a sore throat and slight afternoon fever for 10 days now.
Colds for me ussually take the pattern of a sore throat for a day or
two and then a head and chest cold for another week.  This one just
hangs in the sore throat stage and is making swallowing and sleeping
unpleasant.  And it doesn't go away.    Also I am seeing and feeling
little white bumps on my tongue and in the back of the mouth that are
also linger.

I have been to my doctor and been told that he has seen other patients
recently with the same problem. He recommends that I take aspirin,
rest, gargle with salt water.  He figures that it will go away in "due
course".

Has anybody had this virus and how long did it last for you?    I live
in Northern California.

I've heard of other people with similar symptoms, and I seem to have
been fighting off a cold or something for a month now.   A physician
also described something like this that she has seen and she has even
had it herself.

However, any long lasting sore throat could be a strep infection, and it
might be worth having a throat culture.  I would be surprised in you saw
a physician who didn't take one, but maybe your throat didn't look that
bad at the time.

My doctor looked at the throat and said that it didn't look like
strep.  Just red and not mucusie.

Sorry about that, You know yourself, you can always ask a second opinion
or simply keep in touch with your doctor so as to find out other patient
prognostics. Grandpa used to say:"Keep busy. This way you won't have time
to to think about becominf ill". Whatever you do, just don't come this
way. ;-) Speedy recovery, Michel.

Steve,
I had a sore throat + fever + fatigue in November-December that lasted for 6
weeks. I thought it was just flu for about 2 weeks and when it didn't go away
I insisted on a  throat culture for strep and {*filter*} test for mono, both of
which were negative. I was on 2 different antibiotics for 4 weeks before it
finally got better. My doctor still says it was just a resistant bacterial
infection. I've been very susceptible to every cold and flu since then,
however, and get very tired very easily.
Get the usual throat cultures/{*filter*} tests to rule out strep or mono, get LOTS
of rest, and good luck...

I'd call your doctor and request a test for Strep Throat and if he declines
see another doctor.

If all else fails treat it with echinacea/goldenseal capsules, 3 caps 4x's
daily which helps to support the immune system as well as having anti-biotic
qualities. But I'd press seeing a doctor in case it is strep; you dont want
to fool around with strep.

Cheers,
Scott
