Bio-Medical Enginnering... High School Student Seeks Advice
Hi! I'm a high school student in Marblehead, MA.
I have always wanted to be a doctor. Lately, however, I've been introduced to
Engineering and Computer Science (Last summer I participated in a NSF Young Scholars
Program where I worked in a robotics lab at Northeastern University -- and I am
currently spear-heading a project to get my High School on the Internet).
As I consider my interests I've started to think that bio-medical engineering is the
right field for me. In my mind, this is a field that combines computers,
engineering and medicine -- a combination of my favorite subjects.
I was wondering if anyone could give me any info. on the subject. I have a few
questions:
1) Are there people out there that are actually working on things like "bionic"
eyes, arms and hearts for disabled people? This is the kind of thing I'd like to
be doing.
2) What is the proper path to take in my college career? (I'm currently a junior in
High School... that time is coming!)
A) Do I major in pre-med or engineering?
B) Is it possible for me to work on the doctor/medicine side of the spectrum
where I'm not just designing and constructing things but I'm actually using
them on patients?
C) Are there any schools in particular that have excellent programs in this
subject (or should I not worry about that until graduate school)?
These are some of the questions that I have not been able to get answered so I
figured I'd give the 'net a shot at something other than crusing the Web. ANY input
would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm trying to get a head start on what I think is an
exciting new frontier in science.
Thanks Again
