Running and Claritin/Loratadine

 Running and Claritin/Loratadine

My friend Kate was recently afflicted by a mysterious and painful
ailment, eventually diagnosed as "peripheral neuropathy" (nerve damage
to the legs).  This manifested itself as a tingling in her legs,
increasing to severe pain.  It was apparently a reaction to the new
drug "Claritin" ("Loratadine"), which her doctor prescribed for a sore
throat/blocked sinus.  The nerve damage will take years to heal.

Now the interesting part.  Kate is a runner, and based on the pattern
of spread of the pain (to all the running muscles), she believes that
her running may have prompted the nerve damage by overloading certain
areas with "tainted" {*filter*}.  In other words, while most people have no
reaction to Claritin, runners and other athletes might be specially
susceptible to problems.

If you are a runner who has taken Claritin/Loratadine, Kate would very
much like to talk to you.  Please reply to this message.

If you are a runner who is considering taking this drug, be on the
lookout for any unusual numbness or tingling.  If you notice something,
STOP and see your doctor.  Get a second or third opinon (she was twice
misdiagnosed) - this is serious stuff.

Thanks for your undivided attention ...

The Harvard Health Newsletter has a report on High {*filter*} Pressure
caused by Claritin and other NSAIDs.
I'll post the article tonight.

I work for Schering, the company that makes Claritin (loratadine), which
means that I'd better state right off the bat that I'm not a spokesman for
them in any way whatsoever. That said, the drug isn't what I'd call a
NSAID. It's an antihistamine, non-sedating (so there's an NS for you, I
guess, instead of "non-steroidal") because it doesn't penetrate the CNS
much. If your friend's sinus problems were due to allergies, then I can
see taking the drug - if they weren't (and sore throats are more often a
sign of infection rather than allergies), then I can't.

Claritin has been sold in Canada, Europe, and Japan for far longer than
it's been available here, and is already OTC in a number of countries. I
haven't heard about an effect like the one you describe, but I'm certainly
interested and concerned.
