Sinus Sx/ENT or Clinicians Commentaries Appreciated for Emergent Sinus Sx on 12-23-99

"The best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered".

                                                        William J. Mayo, M.D.

I am to undergo major endoscopic/debridement sinus/turbinate Sx on the 23rd of this month.  I have
retention cysts, loculated infections, and all of my sinuses are involved...even the sphenoid
cavities.  I have been on antibx's for well over 6 months, steroids, both po and intranasal, and a
myriad of other Rx's, but nothing has worked.

The CT shows severe disease progression from the CT 2 years ago, but there is no bone erosion.  That
was positive to hear.

I am curious as to how long the recovery period is, whether there may or may not be associated
bruising, ocular problems, pain, post-op bleeding, post-Sx remedies, etc.  I know, only one can
speculate, but I am getting > anxious as the day approaches.

Does anyone have any input?  I am a clinician myself, so I open to both views, whether positive or
negative.  I have a pre-op appt. on 12-21-99 and a list of ?'s to have answered.

I trust my professionals and colleagues who do such procedures to enlighten me to the
realities/benefits/complications of this Sxical procedure.

With Much Appreciation,

Mike

for me, the surgery made a big improvement, and I had minimal
discomfort afterwards, no bruising and was back to work in about 5
days.  The only part that I don't like is the groggy feeling after
waking up from surgery.  The packing made it hard to sip liquids, as
you feel the negative pressure in your middle ear with each gulp, but
with rhinorockets, the removal of the packing is a lot easier than
with gauze.  My nose had a little gauze pledglet attached with tape at
the nares, and this had to be changed periodically from oozing {*filter*}.
It wasn't too bad.  Obviously, with surgery near the sphenoid, one has
to be careful about "big red," but with experienced hands, you should
do well.  I found the post-packing removal saline irrigations very
helpful in keeping things open and clean until the mucosa could
heal...  H2
