Cost of Prescription Drugs

As close as I can tell, there is no excuse or rational explanation
for the price of prescription medications -- its "the American way",
what the market will bear, the bottom line of the manufacturers,
the distributers, and the retailers. People complain about the
drug companies jacking up the prices -- lord knows they do --
but don't realize the friendly neighborhood pharmacist is marking
up their antibiotic 100%. Retail prescription prices vary by
one third or more; it really makes sense to shop around. Then
there's the consumer who says to his/her doctor -- "Please write
for the brand name, I've got a prescription card" -- never mind
that the {*filter*} are equivalent but the brand is more expense --
and then gripes about the cost of his health insurance premium.
Yes it costs a lot to develop new {*filter*} -- but the drug houses spend
HUGE amounts of money marketing their products. One blockbuster drug
-- a Tagamet or a Prozac -- can recoup hundreds of millions for a
drug company in the space of one year.
I'm no expert on health care economnics but I'd lay odds that within a few
years the government will be setting drug prices, as is done in
europe. The government is already beginning to do so indirectly through
setting limits on what medicare will pay, some tough bargaining on the
part of the VA and military, etc.
I regret that I've only got opinions, rather than answers! :)
