 Bell's Palsy

Can anyone tell me anything about Bell's Palsy? I know it's caused
by a virus. Does it have any lasting effects? Is it contagious?

Bell's palsy is the paralysis of the {*filter*} nerve.
Symptoms are asymmetric forehead, weakness of eyelids, crooked smile
(sometimes drooling).
Causes are many...Lyme disease, trauma, stroke, etc.
I haven't heard of a virus causing it...but I guess it's possible.

As a matter of interest the Bell in question was Sir Charles Bell - a Scottish
physiologist and surgeon.

I have heard that he was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's clinical tutor, and that he
was the model for Sherlock Holmes because of his great clinical acumen and
deductive powers.

Maybe it's just a vicious rumour - Sherlock Holmes (as every knows) is ENGLISH.

Herpes zoster can cause Bell's Palsy (Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome), but
usually it is not the cause of Bell's Palsy.  Most cases are idiopathic.
